History[edit]

The Institute was founded in the post-Velvet-revolution time as Liberální spolek F. A. Hayeka immediately in the fall of 1989, it was later registered under the name Liberální institut on February 6, 1990. Its best well-known project, the Tax Freedom Day has been published annually since 2000. The Liberal Institute Summer School, now under the name Liberal Institute Mises' Academy, has taken place every year since 1996.

Ideology[edit]

The organization has published works in the general area of classical liberalism, libertarianism, ordoliberalism, and anarchocapitalism; it focuses also on tax reform, less regulation, competition, abolition of state agencies, and criticism of the European Union.

Activities[edit]

The Liberal Institute's main areas of advocacy are individual liberty, limited government, free markets, and peace. Its business focuses on books publication, seminars, lectures, and societal influence through media.

Since 1996, the organization organizes summer schools for high-school and college students.[1] The Institute calculates the Tax Freedom Day for the Czech Republic every year and organizes a public happening to celebrate it.

Almost every year since 1995, the organization organizes a lecture with a significant foreign libertarian personality who is given an award “for the contribution to the development of liberal thoughts and for the realization of freedom, private property, competition and rule of law in practice.”

Publications[edit]

The organization has published over 100 translations of foreign books and papers as well as its own research. Among the foreign books translated by the Institute are e.g. The Wealth of Nations, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Economics in One Lesson, In Defense of Global Capitalism, Man, Economy, and State and others. The Institute used to publish two magazines, Laissez Faire and Terra Libera.
