Lightrhythm Visuals was an independent visual arts DVD label and production company active between 2003 and 2015. It specialized in curating and publishing audiovisual works by visual jockeys (VJs), motion designers, and live cinema artists. The label released over 240 films from more than 70 international contributors across multiple continents.[1]
History
Lightrhythm Visuals was founded in 2003 by Ben Sheppee and Jon Schwark. It aimed to distribute works by artists engaged in real-time visual performance and experimental video. Based initially in San Francisco and later in Tokyo and London, the label issued a series of DVD compilations that included multi-angle remix content and collaborations among artists.[2]
As physical media declined in popularity, Lightrhythm Visuals shifted toward digital distribution, including downloadable visual loops, a streaming channel, and an app-based digital magazine. Activity on the label ended around 2015, with the company’s website converted into an archival resource.[2]
Releases
Lightrhythm Visuals produced several themed compilations and artist-focused DVDs. Among its core series were:
- Lightrhythm Visuals: Singles 01–05 (Microcinema #269, 2006)[3]
- Lightrhythm Visuals: Singles 06–10 (Tapeman #270, 2006)
- Lightrhythm Visuals Singles 11–15 (Microcinema #648, 2007)[4]
Volume 3 featured a multi-angle DVD format where artists remixed one another’s work. This approach was intended to reflect the collaborative nature of live audiovisual artists.
Reception and influence
Lightrhythm Visuals was one of several independent publishers distributing VJ-focused content during the early 2000s, alongside Mixmasters, Visomat Inc., and Pixdisc.[5] It has been discussed in academic writing on the canonization of live audiovisual performance and digital art.[6] The label is also cited in reference books such as VJ: Audio-Visual Art + VJ Culture and vE-jA: Art + Technology of Live Audio-Video.[2]
