Lights on the Lawn is a non-profit organization which aims to enable students to produce, promote, and organize benefit concerts on or near college campuses in support of local causes. It also aim to facilitate a meaningful relationship between the host universities and the local benefit partner of their choosing.[1] The organization works with students leaders on college campuses around the United States, to enabled them to produce annual benefit concerts. Currently, there are annual shows at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee benefiting The Mary Parrish Center and Indiana University Bloomington in Bloomington, Indiana benefiting a local cause which will be selected by the students in the fall. All proceeds of the concerts benefit its non-profit partners. While the organization is relatively young, it has already built a reputation for putting on high quality shows featuring some of the hottest up and coming artists such as The Chainsmokers (Vanderbilt 2014) and Louis the Child (Vanderbilt 2017).
History[edit]
The organization was founded in August of 2012, following the injury of a Vanderbilt student, Luke Moretti, the prior spring. His injuries included a severe spinal cord injury, which necessitated the use of a particular rehabilitation technique called Locomotor Training, involving the use of specialized equipment. At the time, that equipment was not available at any rehabilitation center in Tennessee. This lack of availability prevented Moretti's return to school. A fraternity brother of Moretti's, Theodore Raskin and other members of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity, seized upon an opportunity they had to organize a school wide concert, with support from the Vanderbilt Interfraternity Council. They turned that concert into a philanthropic endeavor, partnering with the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation to raise the funds necessary to purchase the equipment for the Vanderbilt Stallworth Rehabilitation Hospital. The concert, and the organization that followed, would become known as Lights on the Lawn, honoring both its EDM roots and its first and current venue, Alumni Lawn. In that first year, the organization managed to raise over $96K, enough to purchase the equipment.
With its initial philanthropic goals achieved, the organization turned its attention to the future. While looking for a new cause, a Vanderbilt freshman was raped on campus. This is what spurred the organization dedicated its focus to supporting survivors of sexual assault and domestic abuse. To help them achieve this goal, the organization began a search for a new official partner, and found that partnership in The Mary Parrish Center. The partnership, which continues to this day, has had a large impact on the center, allowing it to make several capital investments, including the purchasing of its facilities.
As of 2016, the organization has raised over $293K for its non-profit partners.

The Mary Parrish Center[edit]
The Mary Parrish Center is a transitional housing center, supplying refuge to the survivors of domestic violence, emotional abuse, and sexual assault, along with their families. It provides a full range of services, at no cost to the survivors. In 2009, the center refocused its efforts on providing transitional housing. The residents of the center, in addition to the private housing they receive, also benefit from a wide range of services including clinical therapy, career development, financial assistance, housing advocacy, enrichment activities, and case management. Today, the center has provided transitional housing to over 124 survivors, and has helped over 7,000 other women.
