Christopher Arthur Lake (born March 21, 2003), known professionally as Lil Lake, is a rapper, singer, and songwriter. Born and raised in New Jersey, he lived in a suburban neighborhood his whole life. He became known in 2018 for his song "New Wave" featuring Famous Dex and Reggie Mills. [1] Gaining millions of streams on the popular outlet Soundcloud, he was on his way to success. In the following years he was seen nationwide on tours with Lil Tjay, Lil Mosey, Polo G, and more.
Lil Lake's debut project, True Stories (2021) became extremely popular in New Jersey and the surrounding areas. Later that year in August 2021, he made the decision to spend some time abroad in Rome, Italy to reach an audience in Europe. After three months abroad, he had started to gain the recognition he was searching for, having a headlining show in Rome for hundreds of people. He departed from Rome back to his hometown in Millington, New Jersey in December 2021, leaving a huge influence in the city. Rumors of his second project, to be named "You Can Call Me Lake," have been making noise for some time now, where the artist took to Instagram saying that he has completed the project. However, a release date has not been made public, nor a tracklist. It is expected to be released sometime in early 2022.
Early life
Lil Lake was born Christopher Arthur Lake on March 21, 2003 in central New Jersey, the son of Anthony Thomas Lake and Robyn Kim Lake. He has one brother and no other siblings. Growing up in Millington, New Jersey, Lil Lake attended Gill St. Bernards from elementary school through high school. As depicted in his music, his family life throughout his childhood was rough; however, not much more about his family life has been made public. Lil Lake started to learn the piano at the age of 6, when he fell in love with music. It was not until seventh grade (2016) that he recorded his first song and released it on Soundcloud. He has been very vocal about his early days making music, saying that everyone he knew hated it and would tell him this to his face, but he kept working on his craft until it developed more and more.
Career
2016–2017: First Releases on Soundcloud
Always having a passion for music, Lil Lake started releasing songs he would record on his Mac book Pro in his basement on Soundcloud in 2016. The songs would have terrible production and vocals, however it gave him the passion for making rap music. He continued to drop these homemade tracks for a year until the song "Out the Gate" suddenly gained over ten thousand streams in a week with no promotion. This was the first time Lake actually felt that people were listening to his music.
2018–2019: New Wave, Thinking Back, and First Shows
2018 was the first year that Lake's music was gaining traction in the music world. After Dj Khaled promoted him on his Snapchat story, which at the time was massive, Lake's following amassed overnight.[2] A month later, sitting in his bedroom once the buzz wore off, he began to think about quitting music, but then he got a FaceTime call from Famous Dex playing a song he had sent his friend Reggie Mills with a verse on it. Famous Dex featured on Lake's track titled "New Wave" in May 2018, gaining millions of streams across platforms.[3] Lake's career skyrocketed over the next six months, doing concerts in front of tens of thousands of fans besides the likes of Lil Mosey, Polo G, and Young Thug.[4] In late 2019, Lake released his viral single "Thinking Back," gaining a million streams on Spotify in the first week; he was officially established as a rising star.[5]
2020–Present: True Stories
After taking a year hiatus during the first Covid-19 outbreak, Lake returned with his debut project "True Stories" in February 2021. The project showed Lake's diversity and ability to combine a lyrical aspect with the catchy melodic flow he had already been accustomed to. The project did well and passed expectations, even being featured on a billboard in Times Square. Since the release, Lake decided to go abroad to Italy in hopes of gaining international recognition. He accomplished this in Rome, becoming a well-known influencer/artist in the city. Lake returned to his hometown in New Jersey in late November of 2021 and plans to release his second project, rumored to be titled "You Can Call Me Lake," in the early months of 2022.
