Lily Oakes
Comment: Social media and IMDB are generally unreliable sources. There's plenty of sources that mention the subject, but we need to see at least WP:THREE sources that pass the WP:GOLDENRULE and I'm not even seeing one. This also needs to be greatly trimmed to reflect what secondary sources have reported as notable about the subject. This reads much like a CV in prose form. Lily Oakes is a British singer, songwriter, composer, record producer and model. Her work encompasses music, film and television composition, fashion, advertising and contemporary art. She began writing poetry as a teenager before becoming involved in DJing, music production and songwriting. Her music has subsequently appeared in feature films and television productions, while she has also collaborated with artists, composers, galleries and fashion brands.
Early Life
Oakes began writing poetry when aged 13. Two years later she began collecting rare 12-inch vinyl records and started mixing garage, hip hop and electro, subsequently producing music for underground British rappers. She has described the progression from visual art and poetry into music as a gradual creative development, saying in a later interview that it began with "drawing – illustrating and portraits, then poetry, then mixing 12″ vinyl, then production, then recording." She has also said that her musical influences range from the work of composer Scott Bradley to the choral harmonies of Sister Act, while describing her approach to composition in terms of "minimalism and pure intent", and that most of her lyrics were responses to personal feelings and experiences...[1]
At 17, a recording of Lily Oakes singing His Eye Is on the Sparrow came to the attention of singer-songwriter Jack Savoretti. According to Oakes, Savoretti subsequently introduced her to Mike Dixon of Sodarock Music and Songwriter and Producer Ian Barter, with whom she began developing material for her debut album. In her early years, she was signed by IMG Talent.[2]
Music and Television Career
2014–2017: MAMA and early career
Oakes began performing publicly in London during the mid-2010s. A 2015 review of a performance at The Stillery in Camden described her set as consisting of trip-hop-influenced material performed with vocals, looped bass and drums, with occasional violin and electronic elements.[3]
Her debut EP, MAMA[4][5], was developed during sessions at Kensaltown Studios in London with The Suppliers and subsequently completed with producer Ian Barter. The album was released in 2016 through iLuvLive and Ditto. Oakes performed at venues[6] and festivals including St Pancras Old Church, KOKO, The Social and The Great Escape.[7]
2017–2019: Glen Ballard and Duality
In 2017, she began working with American songwriter and producer Glen Ballard.
During this period, she worked on music for fashion presentations and visual projects, including a score for designer Joshua Kane's Fantasy collection at the London Palladium.
Film and television composition
Lily Oakes expanded her work into film and television music and as a result was signed, at the time, by International Classic Music Management (ICM)[8]. Her collaboration with French composer Nathaniel Méchaly led to a song, "The Keep"[9], for the soundtrack[10] of the Swedish romantic drama Swoon[11] originally titled Eld & Lågorin Sweden, released in 2019.
She also collaborated with Méchaly on Shadowplay[12], later distributed internationally as The Defeated. She performed on the series' soundtrack, including the title track "Shadowplay"[13] [14] [15] [16]
In 2024, she wrote and performed the opening and closing theme for the French action-comedy mini-series, Machine, broadcast by Arte. The soundtrack listing credits "Machine" as the opening and closing theme performed by Oakes[17]. The French publication, Bulles de Culture, also credited her as the singer and songwriter of the series' opening theme. [18]
Modelling and Fashion
Alongside her music career, Oakes has worked as a model and appeared in fashion and beauty campaigns. She has been associated with brands including Chanel[19] and Saatchi[20] & Gabbana[21], was featured by Italian photographer Enrico Labriola in 2017[22], and has appeared in photography projects, including being a cover star of Black + White Photography magazine in 2019.[23] [24]. She has also modelled for Vogue [25]
Contemporary art and multidisciplinary work
In 2022, Oakes collaborated with artist Mandy El-Sayegh[26] and choreographer Alethia Antonia on The Minimum[8] with UP Projects,[27] [28] in a public art commission presented as part of London Gallery Weekend[29][30]
The work was later featured in the 2022 Prague Biennale Matter of Art exhibition.[31] [32], and then the Zurich Art Weekend 2023[33] and also in Seoul[34]. The Guardian described the project as a collaboration between El-Sayegh, Antonia and Oakes and characterised it as an exploration of isolation and confinement.[35].
Oakes later collaborated with El-Sayegh on The Amateur, a sound-work exhibition that incorporated voice notes and excerpts from an interview with the artist.[36]
