From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Lin Kuei (Chinese: 林鬼)

Motto: We are the Lin Kuei, more stealthful than the night, more deadly than the dawn![1]

The Lin Kuei is a faction from the Mortal Kombat Series. Its first appearance was in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero, where the Elder Sub-Zero was the early Grandmaster of the clan before Bi-Han, and eventually Kuai Liang. In Mortal Kombat X, the Lin Kuei is available for players to be chosen as their faction.[2] The members include Bi-Han (formerly at Mortal Kombat 9), Lin Kuei Grandmaster (deceased), Kuai Liang, Smoke, Sektor (formerly), Cyrax, Frost (formerly). [3]

History

The exact date the clan was founded is unknown. Before reformation, the Lin Kuei assassins performed evil tasks with the supernatural ability to freeze they possessed. Children were raised away from their families in the clan and grew up training. Leaving the clan is considered treason and is punishable by death[4]. The Lin Kuei uses the Shotokan style of Karate, and their leader, Sub-Zero, originated in China. [5] A Necromancer sorcerer, Quan Chi, hired the Lin Kuei to find an amulet he wanted. Unaware, Sub-Zero also sought the amulet while Quan Chi had hired a Japanese ninja, Scorpion, for the same task, should Sub-Zero fail him. Scorpion and Sub-Zero eventually had a bloody encounter, where Sub-Zero killed him in cold blood. After Sub-Zero delivered the map to the sorcerer, Quan Chi made good on a promise to the Lin Kuei Grandmaster; the rival clan to the Lin Kuei, the Shirai Ryu, was wiped out[6]. The Shirai Ryu was a clan founded by a young boy named Takeda[7], a breakaway member of the Lin Kuei. Takeda founded the clan on Ninjutsu, and their basic colors were yellow instead of blue.

Quotes by Members

Machine or man, you have a warrior's soul. As long as I am Grandmaster, the Lin Kuei will welcome you." -Kuai Liang (Mortal Kombat 11)[8]

Please do not bring me back as a machine, I cannot live like this -Cyrax (Mortal Kombat 11)[9]

With Kronika's help, I will restore the clan's honor (Mortal Kombat 11)[10]

You always mimicked me. But you make a poor Grandmaster. -Noob Saibot (Mortal Kombat 11)[11]

After Reformation

In the new timeline, the Lin Kuei turned good under the new leadership of their new Grandmaster. They are no longer thieves and strive to protect Earthrealm. [12] He moved the clan's headquarters from China to an icy region known as Arctika and fully restored the depleted ranks.

Before Reformation

Somewhere in the northernmost parts of the Asian continent, there exists a clan of assassins and thieves known as the Lin Kuei. This group has existed for years and thrives on the evil intentions of the people who pay for their services. Its warriors are chosen at birth to be raised apart from the workings of day-to-day civilization and are stripped of their former lives. Only the clan knows their existence. Each of them possesses certain skills and abilities of fighting techniques that make them different from modern humans. [13] These abilities are passed on from generation to generation of children, throughout the experiences of training. Certain Lin Kuei warriors possess supernatural abilities, such as the ability to freeze and manipulate water in the air and turn it into ice.

Other Appearances

In Injustice 2, (2017) Sub-Zero appears as a playable DLC guest character.[14]

The Cyber Initiative

The Cyber Initiative is a former division of the Lin Kuei after Kuai Liang assumed leadership. [15] Between the events of Mortal Kombat II and Mortal Kombat 3, Smoke, a Lin Kuei warrior, and the second Sub-Zero, (Kuai Liang) opposed this initiative completely, and fled the supporters. Although fleeing, they were constantly pursued, and the supporters of the initiative attempted to force them in. Sub-Zero escaped alive, but Smoke was eventually captured, which led him to be turned into a Cyber Lin Kuei, as a cyborg. The three cyborgs (Sektor, Cyrax and Smoke) were sent to search for the Second Sub-Zero, but the Lin Kuei warrior was able to get into harmless contact with Smoke. Later on, Smoke found his intact soul inside his cyborg robotic body, so he joined Sub-Zero once more, and fought the other cyborgs, (Cyrax, Sektor) After that, however, Smoke was captured by Shao Kahn's forces, and was locked away in the bowels of Shao Kahn's Fortress in Outworld.
