Lin Shemu (June 18, 1902, Xibei, Fujian Province, Qing Dynasty – January 1, 2025, Fujian, China) was a Chinese unverified supercentenarian who lived to be 122 years and 197 days old. Lin's age was not confirmed by the GRG. Her passport lists her birth date as June 18, 1902.
Biography
She was born on June 18, 1902, in China (Qing Dynasty), in the village of Xibei[1] during the reign of Grand Empress Dowager Cixi. Lin's mother was a peasant and died when Lin Shemu was young. As a child, she dug snails in the fields and sold them, giving the money to her stepmother[2].
She was married and had four daughters and three sons[3]—the youngest son was born on February 4, 1948 (meaning he was 77 years old at the time of her death).
Aside from vision loss due to old age and injuries to both legs sustained in a fall, Lin had no other ailments. She was always able to take care of herself. According to relatives, Lin always had excellent hearing and a healthy appetite. Her youngest son noted that she was always in a good mood and content with life. When asked about the secret of her longevity, she replied, "Being able to eat, drink, and sleep is a true blessing." The Lin family never sought to be included in the Guinness Book of World Records. Lin Shemu was expected to become the world's oldest person on July 22, 2018, following the death of Japanese woman Chiyo Miyako, and was expected to hold the title until her death, but it was taken by another Japanese woman, Kane Tanaka, who was born in 1903.
Lin lived her entire life in Fujian Province, located between Hong Kong and Shanghai. She died peacefully on January 1, 2025, at home in her sleep, at the age of 122 years, 197 days, which corresponds to 44,757 days. Lin Shemu's funeral was held on January 3. Lin's death was reported by the Daily Mirror. Lin Shemu beat Jeanne Calment's age by 33 days, but since Lin was not verified, she did not take first place.
