Linda Buchanan is a Canadian politician who serves as the mayor of the City of North Vancouver, British Columbia. She was elected Mayor in the 2018 election on October 20, 2018.[1] Prior to her election as Mayor, she was a city councillor for two terms.[2]

Political career[edit]

Buchanan was first elected as a school trustee to the North Vancouver School district in 2008.[3] She was subsequently elected as a councillor in the City of North Vancouver in 2011, and re-elected in 2014.

Buchanan announced her intention to run for Mayor in 2018, after longtime Mayor Darrell Mussatto announced his retirement.[4] She beat out five others for the position, including former councillors Rod Clark and Guy Heywood.[5] During the campaign, Buchanan was an advocate of a more modest proposal for the Harry Jerome redevelopment project, with costs estimated to be over $200 million.[6] During her inaugural address, Buchanan discussed the housing crisis, social isolation, and her wish to see North Vancouver become: "the healthiest small city in the world."[7]

She was elected Metro Vancouver vice-chair.[8]
