Linda Mason is a cosmetician and artist.

Early life[edit]

Linda Mason was born on September 13th, 1946 in Sunderland, northeast England. Her fascination for artistic expression was initially inspired by her mother, who was an artist.[1] Mason started her career in the beauty industry by modeling for haute couture designers in Paris while studying cosmetology.

Career[edit]

Linda Mason is a renowned makeup artist who started her career in Beirut teaching cosmetology and selling cosmetics for Lancôme. Later, she became the premier makeup artist for Helena Rubenstein in Paris and revolutionized makeup on the runway by personally applying it to models during fashion shows. She collaborated with famous designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, and Giorgio Armani. Mason's work gained attention in New York, leading her to work with celebrities like Cameron Diaz and Charlize Theron. In 1987, she founded her makeup company, Linda Mason Elements, Inc., and also explored other forms of visual art. In 1998, she opened "The Art of Beauty by Linda Mason," a shop and gallery in Soho, New York City.[2]

Exhibitions[edit]

Mason presented many exhibitions of her work at her Soho workshop and gallery, including Gone (2008), Spring Masquerade (2010), and Ageless Beauty (2011). She has held two solo exhibitions at the National Glass Centre in Sunderland: Visitors to the Seafront (2010) and A Day at the Beach (2015).[3] Her most recent solo exhibition at Studio Vendome in Soho, NYC – Sensory Abstraction: Model as Medium – included a comprehensive selection of mixed-media panels, film, and paintings.[4]

Publications[edit]

Mason has authored several books, including Linda Mason's Sun Sign Makeovers (1985) and later Tanaka-Mason-Kostabi (1992),[5] a collaborative book. In September 2003, she published Makeup, The Art of Beauty,[6] a handbook showcasing techniques and approaches refined over her career. The book was re-released in paperback in May 2007. In October 2004, she released Teen Makeup, Looks to Match Your Every Mood,[7] followed by Eye Candy: 55 easy makeup looks for glam lids and luscious lashes [8] in April 2008.

Filmography[edit]

Mason has also directed many short films. The most notable of these is First Base, which was included in the NYC Independent Film Festival[9] and the ASVOFF film festival at the Centre Pompidou in 2014.[10]
