Lindsay Elms
Lindsay Elms is an active mountaineer and author. Born in Sydney, Australia, but relocated to Christchurch, New Zealand at a young age. Attended Hagley College High School in Christchurch, New Zealand. He enjoys running in marathons and endurance races.[1][2]
Mountaineering
Began his career in mountaineering by joining his high school's tramping club. Joined the Canterbury University Tramping Club in 1974. Spent six years climbing in the Southern Alps in order to learn techniques required for mountaineering. Increased his skill by climbing mountains in Southeast Asia, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Europe and North Africa. Has also climbed in Latin America. [3] He is credited with many ascents, including the first ascent of Eden Mountain in 1999.[4] He has climbed over two hundred and fifty mountain peaks on Vancouver Island, including lower and lesser-known peaks.
Other work
In 1985, he worked for the United States Antarctic Research Program at McMurdo Sound in Antarctica.[5] He worked as a Mountaineering Instructor for the Canadian Outdoor Leadership Training (COLT) program at Strathcona Park Lodge for eight years.
Elms wrote two books on the topic of climbing history in Vancouver Island: Beyond Nootka (1996) and Above the Bush (2012).
Contributes to three mountaineering journals: the Canadian Alpine Journal, The Gazette and the Island Bushwhacker.[6]
He is employed at the St. Joseph's General Hospital in Comox.[5]
