Personal life[edit]

Partridge was born at Canterbury Hospital,[1] New South Wales and was raised at Bidwell Park, where he attended Bidwell Park Primary School and then Kingsgrove North High School.[2] Partridge’s father was a painter and his mother was a commercial artist. Lindsay Partridge is married and has three children. His main residence is in Sydney, NSW, Australia.

Education[edit]

Partridge graduated from the University of New South Wales[3] in 1979 with a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Ceramic Engineering. In 1992 he completed Monash University’s[4] Leadership Development Program at Mount Eliza, Victoria, and in 2000 gained a Corporate Directors Diploma through the University of New England.[5] During 2008 he attended Stanford University, California, where he graduated from the Stanford University Executive Program.

Business career[edit]

Whilst at the University of New South Wales, Partridge started a cadetship where he gained practical experience in all aspects of the manufacture of ceramic products. In 1977 he joined PGH Industries Ltd as Management Trainee and from 1977 to 1980 he progressed rapidly through the ranks of the organisation. His various roles assisting senior management at PGH Eureka Ceramics in Ballarat, Victoria, gave him a grounding in production and personnel. Relocating to Maitland, NSW, as Unit Manager at the firm’s East Maitland plant, he was then appointed Marketing Manager for PGH Ceramic Bricks.

In 1980 Partridge became Executive VP (Divisional Mgr & Dir) of Stonelight Tiles[6], California USA (Felt and Textiles Ltd; Acmil Ltd; BTR Ltd) and from 1983-1985 was the National Operations Manager of PGH Ceramic Tiles. It was at this stage in his career that Partridge joined the firm of Austral Bricks[7] in western Sydney as Works Manager of Plant 2 at Horsley Park. In 1987 he was appointed Manufacturing Manager, a position in which he served until May 1989, becoming NSW General Manager of Austral Bricks until November 1999. He held the position of Deputy CEO from 1997-1999 concurrently with his other responsibility of NSW General Manager and was elevated to Chief Executive Officer, a post which he held from November 1999 until September 2000, when he was made Managing Director.

Currently, Partridge is Managing Director of Brickworks Limited (BKW)[8], having served in this capacity since late 2000. Brickworks Limited was established in 1934 and listed on the Australian Stock Exchange in 1961. The company currently has a market capitalisation of approximately $2.3 billion. There are approximately 9,000 shareholders and 1,500 employees.

Since his appointment as Managing Director, the business has grown from being a quality regional manufacturer of bricks in NSW and QLD, to a leading building products supplier in Australia. This has been achieved due to a combination of factors including: rapid diversification of the product range to include the full range of clay and concrete building products; development of innovative products within each business; strategic acquisitions; strong leadership at Board and executive level; active and expert management; and highly trained staff. In addition, Partridge has overseen the extraction of value from surplus land assets, yielding higher shareholder returns and to fund growth. A Property Trust has been established as a JV with the Goodman Group [9] to create an additional and stabilizing income stream and value store.

Since 2005, Partridge has been a Director of the Australian Brick & Blocklaying Training Foundation[10] and in 2006 was Founding Chairman following incorporation of the organisation. He was chair in 2009 and 2012. From 2001 to 2003 Partridge was a Non-Executive Director of Bristile Limited, a period which coincided with the purchase of the aforementioned company by Brickworks Limited. He has had a 20-year involvement with the Clay Brick & Paver Institute of Australia Ltd (now known as Think Brick Australia[11]), and held the role of Chairman extensively during his tenure. He has been a Director of the Institute since 1998.

Industry and university appointments[edit]

Partridge is involved with boards and committees in industry and education. His contribution to the national housing industry included the Housing Industry Association (HIA)[12] from 2001, and also a related body, the National Manufacturers and Suppliers Council.[13] He was a member of the NSW chapter of HIA from 1993-1998. From 1987 to 1996 he served, in turn, as both president and vice-president of the NSW chapter of the manufacturer representative body, Clay Brick Association of NSW. He was a visiting Committee Member at the University of New South Wales from 1993 – 1998.

Charity and youth[edit]

From 2012 - 2017, Partridge was been a director of the Children’s Cancer Institute of Australia (CCIA) [14], a role in which he was especially active to promote fund raising for research into cancer that commonly afflicts children and young people.

From 2002 to 2006 he was Foundation Director of HIA Youthbuild, an organisation established by the Housing Industry Association to support skills development of young apprentices in the industry.

Honours and memberships[edit]

In 2012, Partridge was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2012 Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Birthday Honours List, "for services to the Building and Construction Industry, particularly in the areas of industry training and career development, and to the community ".

He was a Member of the Business Council of Australia, a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and Senior Fellow of the Corporate Directors Association.

In May 2018, Lindsay Partridge was awarded the Sir Phillip Lynch Award of Excellence,[15] the HIA’s highest award.
