Lingoda GmbH, operating as Lingoda[1], is a subscription-based E-learning platform that teaches language in live classes via video-conferencing. It teaches four languages: English, German, French and Spanish, in addition to Business English.
As of 2022, the company works over 1,500 teachers, and has taught over 100,000 students worldwide. Lingoda runs classes on a round-the-clock basis, with the company reporting that it operated over 550,000 language classes in 2021.
History[edit]
Lingoda was founded in Berlin, Germany in 2012 by brothers Fabian and Felix Wunderlich under the name Easy Languages. Its headquarters are in the Mitte district of Berlin. At the time, the company offered one-on-one German language instruction.
In 2013, Easy Languages was rebranded as Lingoda[2], and the company expanded its operations to offer English lessons, as well as classes for small groups. In 2016, Lingoda started teaching French and Spanish courses.
In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic led to a substantial boost in business for Lingoda. The company reportedly increased its customer numbers by 200 percent in a one-year period from 2020 to 2021[2].
In 2021, Lingoda received an investment of $68 million from U.S. based venture capital firm Summit Partners[3]; it has reportedly drawn a total of about 70 million euros in investment between its founding and 2021. This funding has led Lingoda to be described as a potential “unicorn startup”, referring to technology companies valued at over US$1 billion.
In 2022, Lingoda adopted a new mission statement, with an aim to “build bridges around the world through language learning”.
Concept[edit]
Lingoda’s founders have compared its business model to those of traditional language schools, adapted to an online setting, with all classes being taught live via videoconferencing software Zoom[2].
Lingoda offers online classes on a 24/7 basis, taught by over 1,500 teachers (as of 2022) who work remotely from international locations of their own choice. Classes take place either privately or in groups of up to five students.
Lingoda operates on a subscription-based model, in which students pay for a certain number of classes per month. The company also has an intensive plan called the Language Sprint[4], in which students attend class frequently over a set time period (for example, two months). Students who attend every class within that time are offered a partial or full refund.
Language Courses[edit]
Lingoda curricula align with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), which codifies the abilities of language learners from A1 (beginner) up to C2 (advanced). The company creates its own curricula, and as of 2022, it offers language classes at all CEFR levels except C2. Its English and German classes range from A1 to C1 level, and its French, Spanish and Business English classes range from A1 to B2.
Lingoda’s courses follow an approach that the company calls the “Lingoda Method”, which places a heavy emphasis on practical communication and speaking. Classes are typically taught entirely in students’ new language. The company states that its teachers are native-level speakers of the languages that they teach, and that teachers are expected to hold relevant qualifications as a language instructor.[citation needed]
Reception[edit]
PC Magazine gave Lingoda a positive review, praising the in-person instruction and the affordability, although it criticized the company for the limited number of languages it offers[5].
Awards[edit]
In 2021, Lingoda was named the Hottest EdTech Startup at The Europas Awards[6]. It also won the 2021 EdTech Cool Tool Award for Best Language Learning Solution, and was named Overall Language Learning Company of the Year at the EdTech Breakthrough Awards.
In 2018, LinkedIn listed Lingoda as one of Germany’s 25 most sought-after startups.
