Lisa Samuels is a transnational (US and New Zealand) poet, novelist, memoirist, editor, and theorist. She earned her PhD from the University of Virginia. She currently teaches literature, theory, and creative writing at The University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Samuels focuses on transformance and identity, how humans become signs and how language speaks the human and non-human world. Her critical essays engage with power and the body, transnationalism and displacement, and ‘imagining what we don’t know’ in theories such as membranism and distributed centrality. After earlier work on transatlantic and US writers (such as Laura Riding, Lyn Hejinian and Leslie Scalapino), including the essay ‘Deformance and Interpretation'[1], her work took a critical turn to include the transpacific. Her genre experiments extend across poetry, memoir, essay, and fiction into work with film and sound art.

Biography[edit]

Lisa Samuels was born in Boston, 1963. She grew up in the US, Sweden, and Israel/Palestine. In addition to university education and work in the US, Samuels has lived in Yemen, Malaysia, Spain, and since 2006 in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
