List and Ride is an online marketplace for bike rental and cycling activities.[1][2] Its website facilitates cyclists looking to rent the right bicycle for the right occasion. Through the peer-to-peer format of the platform, anyone can list a bike for rent. The majority of the bikes listed on the platform are mid-to-higher-end bicycles distributed over 33 bike categories. The service is concentrated in major European countries, including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United Kingdom.

Concept[edit]

The service is named after the mechanism that represents both sides of the marketplace. On one side is the lender, who lists their bike on the platform, making it available for rent. The other side is the renter who hires and rides the bike.

The peer-to-peer system is an alternative to the existing forms of bicycle-sharing system, such as automated stations or dockless, and allows private owners to rent their own bike.

Service[edit]

There are over 1500 bicycles listed on the site, with great variety, including city bikes, road-racing bikes, mountain bikes, e-bikes, gravel bikes, and more.[3]

Users may use the site in order to participate in cycling events such as Velothon Berlin[4] without transporting their bikes.

The platform is operates worldwide and is currently available in five languages - English, German, Spanish, Italian and Dutch.

Security[edit]

Upon creating an account, members set up an online identity, and after leaving comments on their experiences with other members, develop a reputation. The company does not own any bicycles; it is a broker which receives a commission from every booking. A bike insurance is provided to reduce the risks for both lender and renter.[5][6] For professional bike suppliers the company has developed a booking plug-in that can be integrated on the supplier’s website, allowing their clients to book directly with the supplier online.

History[edit]

In October 2016 List and Ride was founded by Johannes Stuhler and Gert-Jan van Wijk as a GMBH in Berlin.[7] [8]

In December 2016, the company showcased its business model to Mannheim Business School's alumni event[9], as an example of a success-story.

In Spring 2017 the company expanded into three new markets: Italy,[10] Spain and the Netherlands with localized services. In August 2017 the company initiated a crowdfunding campaign and was able to successfully close its first financing round.[11] [12] In August 2018 the company opened two experience centers, one in Berlin and one in Munich to better support its brand partners.
