In the United States, there are several Intrastate U.S. Highways, that is, U.S. Numbered Highways that exist entirely within one state.
Overview
Since 1991, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), the organization that approves U.S. Highway System designations, has been in the process of eliminating all intrastate U.S. Highways less than 300 miles (480 km) in length, "as rapidly as the State Highway Department and the Standing Committee on Highways of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials can reach agreement with reference thereto."[2] Nonetheless, there are still many intrastate U.S. Highways in existence, but under AASHTO's current policy, only one such highway, U.S. Route 158 (US 158), is not on the endangered list; it runs for 347 miles (558 km) through North Carolina.[3].
New additions to the system must therefore serve more than one state, although the length of such multi-state proposals is not an issue.[2] One recent addition, US 121, has been proposed for a length of only 62 miles (100 km), yet its plan calls for it to go through two states (Virginia and West Virginia).[4][5]
