The Miss Aloha Hula competition was introduced in 1971[1] as part of the week-long festivities of the Merrie Monarch Festival held annually in Hilo, Hawaii. Originally known as Miss Hula, the title was later changed to Miss Aloha Hula after Aloha Dalire had won the inaugural competition.
The Miss Aloha Hula competition is held on Thursday night - the first night of hula competition at the Merrie Monarch Festival. Each hālau may submit one contestant who is 18-25 years old and unmarried. Individual female dancers compete for the title in both hula kahiko (ancient dance) and hula ʻauana (modern dance). During their performances, no microphones are used for the oli (chant). Contestants are judged on their costuming and lei adornments.
