| Mei Xiuying's older brother, Mei Jiabing(梅家炳), was a department store salesperson. One day in his 30s, He was stopped by Japanese troops while carrying his 3-year-old son on the road. Jiabing was considered a Chinese soldier by the Japanese army because of his calloused hands due to carrying goods over the years. He and his son were later taken to the Drum Tower Square, and then escorted to Xiaguan along with other captives for collective execution.
Mei Xiuying's eldest brother-in-law Zhang Jinhong(张金洪) and his younger brother were both shot and killed by the Japanese troops when they passed by the Zhongyang Gate.[1]:88 | |||||
