Historical Impact of New York City Public School Alumni[edit]
New York City and its public school alumni has shaped music, theater, the arts, and pop culture for decades. Music genres like jazz, doo wop, disco, salsa, hip hop, and rock, have roots in New York City because of artists who are also alumni of public schools.
The music of New York City, largely influenced by New York City public school alumni, set the stage for American music across genres. Influential artists like jazz musician Sonny Rollins (Benjamin Franklin High School), members of the Doo Wop group The Tokens (Abraham Lincoln High School), folk artist Suzanne Vega (High School of Performing Arts), freestyle music group Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam (Julia Richman High School), bachata band Aventura (South Bronx High School), and rapper The Notorious B.I.G. (George Westinghouse Career and Technical Education High School) shaped their respective genres during and after their times as New York City public school students.
The Music of New York City and many of its most influential creators originated in New York City public schools. George Gershwin, one of the most well-known American composers who has shaped the current state of classical music, is an alum of one of the city's earliest public schools. After leaving the school at age 15, Gershwin went on to become a world-renowned songwriter and composer who helped American classical music gain international recognition.[1] Gershwin's predecessor and the next great American composer, Aaron Copland, is an alum of New York's Boys High School who changed American classical music to include aspects of jazz and folk music. Gershwin, Copland, and other New York City public school alumni were valuable and impactful musicians who greatly influenced American classical music and composition.[2] Hip Hop and rap were started and made popular almost entirely because of musicians who are also alumni of New York City's public schools. Kurtis Blow and LL Cool J were influential in making hip hop mainstream, and both grew up in New York City while attending public school.
