This is a list of the important and recurring characters throughout the Professor Layton video game series.
Main characters[edit]
Professor Hershel Layton[edit]

Professor Hershel Layton (エルシャール・レイトン Erushāru Reiton) is the title character and protagonist of the series. He is a stereotypical English gentleman, who enjoys solving puzzles and drinking tea. He is a professor of archeology at London's Gressenheller University. Because of his prowess at solving puzzles and mysteries, he is well known throughout London. His catchphrase is, "That's what a gentleman does." The signature feature of his appearance is his black top hat (given to him by his deceased sweetheart, Claire), which he wears along with an orange shirt under a black high-collared coat with matching pants. As he became a professor at age 27, he is 37 in the first trilogy. He is also adept at fencing, as demonstrated in a sword fight against Duke Anton Herzen in Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box as well as two others with Descole in Professor Layton and the Eternal Diva and Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy.
Pre-Game Life[edit]
Layton's original name was Theodore Bronev. His father, Leon Bronev, was a famous archaeologist, but due of his vast knowledge of the ancient super-civilization of the Azran, he and his wife Rachel were kidnapped by the evil Targent organization, leaving the young Theodore and his brother Hershel orphans. Shortly after, he was adopted (at the age of six) by his adoptive parents, Roland and Lucille, thereafter involuntarily suppressing the memories of his past. Since Roland and Lucille wanted to adopt the real Hershel but never met him, Hershel give his name to Theodore in an effort to keep him away from the Azran Legacy and let him live a happy life with a loving family.
When he was 14, the adopted Hershel and his parents moved to Stansbury, where he met Randall Ascot. He and Randall both demonstrated great skill in fencing. Randall was very interested in archaeology and took Layton, who didn't care much for archaeology, on frequent adventure trips. One day, Layton accompanied Randall on an investigation of the Akbadain ruins. During this, Layton accidentally stepped on a trap and Randall fell through the resulting crack in the ground. Layton made it out of the ruins, but his grief at being responsible for the loss of his best friend caused him to move to London. Layton decided to honor his lost friend by becoming an archaeologist. He attended and graduated Gressenheller University, where he later became a professor of archaeology. During his time there, Layton was taught by Dr. Andrew Schrader.
At Gressenheller, Layton met Clark Triton and Claire Foley, the latter of whom he dated, hoping to eventually ask for her hand. Claire gave him his trademark hat as a congratulatory gift for being hired as a professor. However, that same day, when the time machine she was working on was tested, it exploded, killing her. It seems that before this, he had lost contact with another classmate of his named Paul, who, after seeing Layton and Claire in love, grew jealous and became the evil genius Don Paolo. In a flashback during the third game, it is revealed that Layton comforted a young boy named Clive Dove, whose parents had also been killed in the explosion, and kept him from running back into the time machine's ruined building to find them. Since then, Hershel has never stopped wearing the hat Claire gave him as a constant memento. Layton, who discovered that the events of that day had been censored, undertook an investigation until he was beaten by thugs (presumably those of Prime Minister-to-be Bill Hawks). He restarted his investigation multiple times, and though he always reached a dead-end, he vowed to never give up. Several years after the tragedy, Layton saved Emmy Altava from being wrongly arrested for a crime she did not commit. Although she remembers this encounter, he does not.
In-Game Life[edit]
At the start of Professor Layton and the Last Specter, Layton is summoned by Clark to solve a mystery. This action spawns a chain of events that leads Layton in the following three years (the second game trilogy and The Ethernal Diva film) to meet Clark's son, Luke Triton, meet again Emmy Altava, whose becomes his assistant, uncover the hidden truths of his past as well the mysteries of the Azran Civilization, and destroy the very same organization that destroyed his early childhood life, the Targent. He also reunites with Randall Ascot in Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask, who survived his fall but was left amnesiac for years; his older brother, who masquerades as the villainous Jean Descole and with whom he clashes multiple times; and his biological father. At the end of Professor Layton and the Azran Legacy, after saving the world from a rampage of Azran golems, Layton swears to never accept back his original name or recognize Bronev as a father, but he expresses his hopes to meet him again one day as a friend and colleague.
In Professor Layton and the Curious Village, Layton and Luke go to St. Mystere to solve a mystery involving an inheritance dispute. Once there, they meet Flora, daughter of the late Baron Augustus Reinhold, whose will needs deciphering. After discovering the secret of the village, Flora decides to leave her father's fortune alone so the robotic village people can continue to function as normal, and Layton becomes her guardian.
In Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box, Layton visits his old mentor's home, only to discover him (presumably) dead after opening a supposedly cursed box. With a train ticket to the Molentary Express as the only clue, he and Luke set off to discover the troubled past of a once sparkling city and free Anton Herzen, a duke scaring his own people into thinking he is a vampire, from an unending illusion and sorrow.
In Professor Layton and the Unwound Future, Layton and Luke are invited to attend an event demonstrating a time machine and witness the Prime Minister Bill Hawks disappearing along with the time machine's inventor, Dimitri Allen (under the guise of Dr. Alain Stahngun). Soon, he receives a letter by someone who claims to be Luke from ten years in the future, telling them to head to a clock shop. Upon heading there, a time machine is activated, and he and Luke are transported to what appears to be the London of the future. While on his quest in Future London, Layton repeatedly sees a woman similar to his former love, Claire. In the end, it is revealed that the time machine and Future London were an elaborate ruse all the time, created by a young man named Clive Dove to avenge the injustices behind the original time machine's incident. At the same time, the mysterious woman is indeed Claire, who explains that the original time machine worked for a short time before exploding, launching her ten years into the future. Due to the incomplete nature of the machine, she is doomed to travel back to her death date. Layton is left heartbroken by being separated again, but he is able to finally accept her death.
At the end of The Unwound Future, Luke leaves London with his family and bids a final goodbye to Layton. Soon after, Layton receives a letter from Luke, asking the professor to help him solve an unspecified turmoil that befell his new home. After he finishes reading said letter, Layton looks outside his office window, knowing that a new adventure awaits.
Luke Triton[edit]

Luke Triton (ルーク・トライトン Rūku Toraiton) is a young boy who accompanies Professor Layton. He aspires to be a gentleman like his professor, though, like many boys his age, he has a tendency to let a cheeky remark slip out. He is fond of puzzles, animals, teddy bears, and the color blue. Luke is also able to understand and converse with animals and has an appetite he can never seem to quench. While he consistently wears a sweater throughout the first trilogy, he wears suspenders in The Last Specter and The Eternal Diva, a vest in The Miracle Mask, and an open coat in The Azran Legacy.
Layton is an old friend of Luke's father, Clark. After the professor helps his family and hometown during the events of The Last Specter, Luke asks to become his apprentice, living with him in London until the end of The Unwound Future, when he moves with his family to another country.
Flora Reinhold[edit]

Flora Reinhold (アロマ・ラインフォード Aroma Rainfōdo, Aroma Reinford in Japanese version) is the daughter of the wealthy Augustus Reinhold and his wife, Viola (both of whom died before the events of The Curious Village). At the end of The Curious Village, she makes the decision to leave the fortune and allow St. Mystere to remain as it is. She is sweet, shy, and reserved but has been known to show her stubborn side when dealing with others' concerns for her safety. After the events of The Curious Village, she becomes Layton's protégée and joins Layton and Luke on their mysteries. She also loves to cook, but, to Layton and Luke's dismay, she cannot cook well.
In The Diabolical Box, a disguised Flora sneaks onto the Molentary Express to join Professor Layton and Luke but gets kidnapped in the village of Dropstone by the evil genius Don Paolo, who then replaces her until Layton unmasks him in the town of Folsense. On the train ride back to London, Layton and Luke rescue her from Dropstone.
In The Unwound Future, Flora, angered that Layton and Luke consistently go on adventures without her, follows them to London's Midland Clock Shop along with Inspector Chelmey and Barton. She is brought to Future London and helps Layton on his quest. Near the end of the game, where Future Luke is revealed to be Clive, he kidnaps her, and Flora later gets rescued within Clive's mobile fortress.
Emmy Altava[edit]

Emmeline "Emmy" Altava (レミ・アルタワ Remi Arutawa, Remi Altava in Japanese version) is Professor Layton's assistant as appointed by the President of Gressenheller University and one of the main characters of the second trilogy. She loves taking pictures, taking her camera everywhere with her. Head-strong and energetic, she is also a martial arts expert, even able to hold her own against Descole and Bronev's henchmen.
Some years prior to the events of Last Specter, Layton saved Emmy from being arrested by Inspector Grosky. Layton explained why Emmy was not guilty of stealing a young boy's wallet: the boy had planted his mother's purse in her bag to avoid getting into trouble with his mother.
Emmy's background remains a mystery until The Azran Legacy, when Layton learns she was raised by Bronev and is so fond of him that she calls Bronev "Uncle Leon." Being raised by the head of the Targent organization, Emmy was fully trained, thus explaing her outstanding fighting and intellectual abilities. She was then tasked to infiltrate as a mole and spy on Layton during his research of Azran relics. Due to her loyalty to Bronev, she kidnaps and threatens Luke's life after revealing her secret, even though it pains her very much. A conversation between Luke and her shortly after reveals that she remembers what a good-natured man Bronev used to be, and she hopes that the professor will snap Bronev out of his madness. To this end, she leaves Luke behind to secretly help Layton as she recognizes Luke as a very qualified ally. After Targent's downfall, Emmy, full of regrets, resigns as Layton's assistant and names Luke as her successor. She then leaves them, promising to return when she will be worthy of the title of Layton's assistant once more.

Inspector Chelmey[edit]

Inspector Chelmey (チェルミー警部 Cherumī Keibu) is a shrewd detective with London's Scotland Yard, reputable for striking fear into the hearts of London criminals, even though that fear seems to be misplaced. Despite this, it seems that Layton and Luke always manage to be one step ahead of the inspector. When not working, he enjoys his wife's sweet potato fritters. In the European releases of the games, his favourite food is cakes.
Although Chelmey was first mentioned in The Curious Village, the Chelmey whom Layton and Luke met was the evil Don Paolo posing as him. Chelmey appeared in the flesh in The Diabolical Box, spurring an initial confusion about his identity due to the previous ruse.
Chelmey's assistant, Constable Barton, is a timid man prone to making mistakes, though he has covered up for some of Chelmey's oversights in the past.
Some of Chelmey's background is revealed in The Last Specter: he had previously worked under Scotland Yard's top detective, Gilbert, who was Barton's father. According to a question from Gilbert, Chelmey had not been married at the time. At some point, they investigated the time machnine incident but were unable to solve it, leaving a bitter taste on Chelmey. When Gilbert and Chelmey tracked down an infamous London criminal some time later, a rather headstrong Chelmey ignored Gilbert's directions and ran into an ambush. Gilbert saved Chelmey's life, but tragically, this action cost him his own life as he was mortally shot. Chelmey then vowed to serve Scotland Yard with everything he has and take care of his own life as well, while taking Barton under his wing in honor to his friendship with Gilbert.
Chelmey marries Amelie Grosky during The Azran Legacy, and the two are shown on their honeymoon during the game, vacationing almost everywhere Layton and friends travel without his formally meeting the professor.
Don Paolo[edit]

As Layton's self-declared nemesis and the main villain of the first game (he had a minor role in Diabolical Box and allied with Layton in The Unwound Future), Don Paolo (ドン・ポール Don Pōru) is a brilliant scientist and inventor banished from the scientific community for performing unethical experiments. A genius of machinery and a master of disguises, Don Paolo studied in the same university as Layton, and his unrequited love for Layton's deceased girlfriend Claire caused is his main reason for hating the professor. When he is not plotting evil, Don Paolo enjoys making and listening to music.
In The Curious Village, Don Paolo follows Layton, hoping to steal the inheritance he was supposed to recover, but he accidentally discovers the true nature of the robotic citizens of St. Mystere and decides to take control of their technology while posing as the Inspector Chelmey. He also tries to kill Layton twice: first by radio-controlling a dishevelled Ferris wheel into squashing Layton and Luke, and then by demolishing the St. Mystere tower with his signature flying machine.
In The Diabolical Box, Don Paolo replaces Flora in attempt to spy on Layton and claim the supposedly cursed Elysian box for himself, but, to his misfortune after being unmasked, Inspector Chelmey pursues him. It is not specified how this pursuit ends.
In the prologue to The Eternal Diva, Don Paolo tries to blackmail London by silencing Big Ben, only to be foiled by Layton.
In The Unwound Future, Paolo is at first hired by Clive to pose as an older Dr. Schrader, but, after running into Layton, he allies himself with the professor since they share a common enemy: the scientist Dimitri Allen, whose failed time machine experiment killed Layton's sweetheart and Don Paolo's crush, Claire. He later aids Layton to save London from Clive Dove's madness, but it is not known what happens to him afterwards.
Inspector Clamp Grosky[edit]

Inspector Clamp Grosky (クランプ・グロスキー Kuranpu Gurosukī) is a police inspector from Scotland Yard who plays a role in the second trilogy similar to Inspector Chelmey's in the first. He has a younger sister named Amelie who goes on to marry Chelmey, making Chelmey Grosky's brother-in-law. The energetic Grosky has a fiery passion for mysteries that require his expertise and is also very athletic, apparently able to run faster than cars and swim faster than sharks. His distinguishing features are his chest hair and his pompadour hairstyle.
He is married for the duration of the second game trilogy, but, by the time of The Azran Legacy, his unseen wife asks for divorce.
Hanna, an admirer of his, is the self-proclaimed president and sole member of a fan club called the Groskettes. She uses her remarkable tracking skills to follow and sometimes even precede Grosky on the scene of a crime. In the end credits montage for The Azran Legacy, Grosky is shown to be promoted for the arrest of Leon Bronev, while Hanna is contacted by Leonard Bloom, as her unique abilities have caught the eye of British intelligence.
Jean Descole / Desmond Sycamore[edit]

Jean Descole (ジャン・デスコール Jan Desukōru) is the main villain of the second trilogy and The Eternal Diva. He is secretly Layton's older brother, and his ultimate goal is to seek and destroy the Azran Legacy. Over the games and the film, he attempts to claim three historic Azran sites—the Golden Garden, the ruins of Ambrosia, and the Infinite Vault of Akbadain—as his own, whether it means deceiving others or using force. He blackmails Clark Triton (Luke's father) and almost destroys the city of Misthallery, manipulates Oswald Whistler into kidnapping and brainwashing innocents, and finally tricks Randall Ascot into almost submerging the town of Monte D'Or under a flood of sand. However, one by one, every site Descole seeks is claimed by the Targent for their own use.
His background is revealed in Azran Legacy: he has a resentment towards the Azran civilization as a result of what happened to his family. Not only did mother die when he was young, but his father became corrupted while searching for the Azran civilization's secrets. Descole's original name was Hershel Bronev, and though he had been selected for an adoption, he gave his name to his younger brother, who was named Theodore at first, so Theodore would be adopted by Roland and Lucille Layton instead and be kept away from his true family legacy.
As he grew up, the original Hershel decided that, if he obtained the power of Azran, he would have revenge against the Targent and the Azran civilization itself. Under the alias Professor Desmond Sycamore, an archaeologist and an authority on ancient ruins, he tried to lead a normal life and distance himself from his family history. He even had a wife a daughter, but both were inexplicably killed in a Targent assault. Left alone with his grief, Sycamore created the image of Descole, a manifestation of his despair and vengeance.
While he almost kills numerous people and ravages two cities, Descole is not purely evil. In The Azran Legacy, he resumes his identity as Sycamore to help Layton search for the key to the Azran sanctuary. After Descole reveals himself and forges a temporary truce with Layton, he demonstrates selfless bravery and saves Luke's life by putting himself in danger. While lying unconscious after this incident, he dreams of Aurora, who sees hope for redemption in him as well as a history of regret and pain. After finally stopping the Targent for good, Descole feigns his death and then escapes with his servant Raymond, seeking another purpose in life.
Granny Riddleton[edit]
Granny Riddleton (ナゾーバ Nazōba) is a recurring character, first appearing chronologically (though not present for the rest of the game) in The Last Specter. Most characters view her as a witch, presumably due to her pointed hat and distinctive laugh. She gathers all the puzzles players could potentially miss as they progress through the games, storing them in a small hut to solve later. In The Unwound Future, she retires and is soon succeeded by her granddaughter, Puzzlette (ナゾリーヌ Nazorīnu), who swats a substitute guard and talking bee named Beasley upon her succession. Riddleton's pet cat, Keats, appears in the prequels except for The Miracle Mask, wherein she appears disguised as "Nana Grams" (a portmanteau of "nana" and "anagrams")/"Elizabeth" with thick eyeglasses.
Dr. Schrader[edit]

Dr. Andrew Schrader (アンドルー･シュレーダー Andorū Shurēdā) is Professor Layton's old mentor from Layton's college days. A polite and intelligent man, he falls victim to the Elysian Box as a result of researching its rumored curse in The Diabolical Box. He sends a letter to Layton before falling victim to the curse, leading Layton and Luke to find the cause behind his "death". Layton soon finds out that Schrader only fell unconscious after experiencing a series of hallucinations and is on his way to recovery.
In The Unwound Future, Layton and Luke find in Future London that Schrader has retired from his work and taken up residence at a medical center called Green Hospital. However, Layton later correctly deduces that Schrader's future counterpart was simply Don Paolo in disguise.
In The Eternal Diva, Schrader is interviewed by Emmy about the lost city of Ambrosia, which he has investigated for a long time.

Katia Anderson[edit]

Katia Anderson is the teen granddaughter of Duke Anton and Sophia Herzen. As the daughter of the mayor of Dropstone and his wife (Anton's daughter), she is well known in her town. After Sophia dies in the events of The Diabolical Box, Katia travels to Folsense to tell her grandfather about the true reason Sophia had left and about the hometown where he lives.
Anton Herzen[edit]

Anton Herzen is the duke of the town Folsense, rumored to be a vampire inhabiting the family estate, Herzen Castle. As the main antagonist of The Diabolical Box, he has a strong connection to the Elysian Box. Although he is actually very old, he appears to not have aged for half a century because of hallucinogenic gases found in his father's gold mine. He returns to his real appearance once he causes his castle to collapse on top of the mine in a fit of madness, trapping the gas below ground.
Anton was married to a woman named Sophia, but, before he discovered she was pregnant she left to protect the baby from the effects of the Folsense gas. For the next fifty years, Anton is sure that Sophia had left him for another man, feeling extremely betrayed.
Anton's brother is Mr. Beluga (born Friedrich Herzen), the owner of the Molentary Express.
At the end of the game, once Anton's elderly appearance is revealed, he discovers the truth about his deceased love and promises to return to her side after living out his final days with Katia, his granddaughter.
Anton makes minor appearances in other games of the Professor Layton series, under his youthful form in all instances. Due to a Japanese-American translation error, he calls himself "Anthony" in the introduction to the "Hidden Door" puzzle of The Unwound Future (the European version corrects this mistake). He also makes a cameo in one of the Weekly Puzzles in The Last Specter and is an unlockable trophy in a bonus feature for The Azran Legacy.
Sophia Herzen[edit]

Sophia was the wife of Anton and grandmother of Katia Anderson in The Diabolical Box. Sophia meet Anton at one of his father's parties, and the two married, making Sophia the youngest noble family member in Folsense. When the hallucinogenic gas that Anton's father accidentally exposed begin to plague the city, Sophia originally intended to stay in Folsense. However, Sophia discovered she was pregnant with her daughter and ran off to keep the child away from the hallucinogenic gas. Sophia founded Dropstone and made the village a safe place to which many residents from Folsense emigrated. Eventually, Sophia gave birth to her daughter, who married Mr. Anderson and had a child of her own named Katia when she grew up. While Sophia's daughter unfortunately died in childbirth, Katia grew up healthily. Before dying, Sophia gave her necklace to Katia and secretly hid in the Elysian Box a letter to Anton explaining why she had to leave Folsense as well as her hopes of returning.
Clive Dove[edit]

Clive Dove (Klaus in Japanese) is the primary antagonist of The Unwound Future. He deceives Layton and Luke into thinking they can travel to the future by posing as a future version of Luke himself. Ten years before hatching his plan, Clive lost his parents in the same time machine explosion which killed Layton's sweetheart, Claire. Believing he was still able to save them, Clive tried to enter the burning remains but was stopped by Layton. Clive subsequently inherited his entire fortune from his foster mother, Constance Dove, and used it to build Future London in underground caverns beneath the present London.
In The Unwound Future, Clive kidnaps the scientists involved in Dimitri Allen's more recent time machine project and builds his own plan to avenge London from the loss of his parents, even creating a mobile fortress to destroy London. However, Layton reverses the circuits of the machine, causing it to destroy itself. Layton and friends save Clive from being killed by his own monstrosity, but Inspector Chelmey arrests him. When Layton asks Clive why he involved the professor in the Future London plan, Clive, fully aware that Layton had the potential to stop him, admits that he really wanted to be saved from himself. He is last seen being led away to prison.
Clive's surname isn't actually mentioned anywhere in the game, but, as he was adopted by Constance Dove, it is implied that this is his surname.
Dimitri Allen[edit]

Dimitri Allen (アラン･ディミトリー Aran Dimitorī, Alan Dimitri in the Japanese version) is the partial antagonist of The Unwound Future. Dimitri was once the friend of Bill Hawks in college and became his rival from then on. He and Bill invented the time machine along with their assistant, Claire Foley. Like Don Paolo, Dimitri was secretly attracted to Claire, so he chose her to first test the machine, but Dimitri found a calculation error and begged Bill to stop. Bill refused, however, because a large budget was put forward in the invention. His love of Claire resulted him to seek revenge against Bill for the destruction that the future prime minister did not prevent.
In the events of the game, Dimitri goes under the guise of Dr. Alain Stahngun and creates a fake time machine to capture Bill. With Clive's help, he hatches a plan to return to the past and save Claire from destruction. However, Clive has his own invention, a mobilized fortress built with the help of many kidnapped scientists to avenge the deaths of his parents, caused by the same explosion that killed Claire. After Clive is defeated, Claire tells Dimitri to choose not to go back to their original plan, and he decides to stop his time machine project indefinitely.
Claire Foley[edit]

Claire (クレア・フォーリー Kurea Fōrī) was Professor Layton's love interest from his university days. Before her presumed death, Layton was prepared to ask for her hand in marriage. She was also admired by other men, including her work partner Dimitri Allen and the evil genius Don Paolo. Ten years prior to the events of The Unwound Future, Claire gave Layton his trademark top hat just before she left for work, where she was killed in a failed time machine experiment. Unbeknownst to Layton, the blast managed to send her ten years into the future, but her body's molecular instability doomed her to inevitably return to the moment of the accident.
When she reappears in The Unwound Future, she assists Layton under the alias of a nonexistent younger sister, Celeste (サリアス Sariasu), to stop Dimitri from building a time machine to undo her death and then to stop Clive from exacting revenge on London. At the end of the game, Layton learns Claire's secret, and she accepts her fate and says her goodbyes to Layton before returning to her time, leaving the professor heartbroken.

Arianna Barde (ユラ･アランバード Yura Aranbādo Yula Alanbard in the Japanese Version) is the heir to the late aristocrat Evan Barde's fortune in The Last Specter. She is referred to as the "Calamity Witch" by the citizens of Misthallery, Luke's hometown. Rumor has it that she seeks to destroy the town and torture whoever speaks ill of her. In truth, her younger brother Tony Barde (トニー･アランバード Tonī Aranbādo Tony Alanbard in the Japanese Version) invented this scheme to protect her, only to worsen her already poor reputation.
Arianna suffers from terminal illness, which keeps her homebound, and she rarely goes outside, but the main reason of her self-imposed confinement is her fear to the other people. While she is in utter shock about the seeming suicide (but really accidental death) of her father, she hears some very nasty comments from the townspeople, who held grudges against him in life due to expensive rents on the lands he owned, leaving her to believe she is despised by everyone. However, the vast majority of Misthallery's population is actually concerned about her situation. She retains a soft spot towards Luke but prefers to keep him away after starting to think she is a witch. In the end, thanks to Luke's words and Loosha's sacrifice, she finally reopens herself towards people, while the preserved, pure air of the Azran Golden Garden cures her illness over the course of the next year.
Loosha[edit]

Loosha (らぐし Ragushi, Lagushi in the Japanese version) is a plesiosaur-like creature who lives in the lake near Barde Manor, home to Arianna and Tony, in The Last Specter. Many years before the game takes place, Loosha was born in the Golden Garden, a lost paradise created by the Azran Civilization hidden at the bottom of the lake on whose shores Barde Manor was constructed. After her parents died, Loosha became only survivor of the Golden Garden and left the garden to meet Arianna and Tony.
For most of the game, she is half of what is rumored to be a "specter" plaguing the town every time a distinct flute melody is heard. However, what appears to be a specter is actually Loosha fighting with fearsome robots constructed by Descole, and the flute melody is really Arianna's effort to lure Loosha away from battle. Understanding the serious danger that Descole's machines pose for the town of Misthallery, she fights them for months but is unsuccessful. Critically injured during her last battle, Loosha sacrifices herself by using her last amount of strength to break the main dam of Misthallery, draining the lake and revealing the entry of the garden. Returning to her homeland, Loosha shows one last display of affection for the Barde siblings before her death, and Arianna plays a final flute melody to honor her. Some time later, the town erects a statue of Loosha in front of the dam to thank her for her sacrifice.
Janice Quatlane[edit]

Janice Quatlane (ジェニス・カトレーン Jenisu Katorēn, Jenis Quatlane in the Japanese version) is a famed opera singer who requests the aid of her ex-teacher, Professor Layton in The Eternal Diva. She is known to have a beautiful voice. In the end, Layton Learns that the mysterious Melina, using Janice's body as a host, asked for his help in the first place. Janice recovers control over her body after Melina decides to quietly die despite Janice's pleading that she stay alive. She is last seen in the final scene of the film, paying a visit to Layton and Luke a few years after the film (the span of time between the Elysian Box and the Unwound Future).
Oswald Whistler[edit]

Oswald Whistler (オズロ・ウィスラー Ozuro Wisurā, Ozlo Whistler in the Japanese version) is the pianist who runs the music in the opera house. He built the Crown Petone around the same time his daughter, Melina died. Crushed by his daughter death, he accepted the help of Jean Descole, whose have invented a machine able to copy someones memories and paste them over the ones of another person. He began kidnapping people in hope to find a person able to completely absorb Melina's memories, using the games with the promise of Ethnernal Life as a ruse to lure possible candidates without giving any suspicion but without apparent success, while left unaware of the real goals of Descole. After finally accepting the death of his beloved daughter Oswald was arrested for his crimes where he still performs his music for the inmates.
Melina Whistler[edit]
Melina Whistler (ミリーナ・ウィスラー Mirīna Wīsurā) is Oswald's daughter and Janice's best friend who died due to an incurable illness a year prior to the start of the film. But she strangely reappears as a young girl. In truth that girl was a kidnapped child named Nina, whose memories were temporarily replaced with Melina's until they faded. But unbeknownst to Oswald, when he tried to place the memories of his daughter in her best friend Janice, the latter willingly allow the memories to take control effectively resurrecting her. She was happy to live but after some time Melina understood the wrongful of putting her own life beforethat of Janice. After receiving a visit of Nina with her memories inside (the latter believing to be talking with Janice), Melina was left shocked to discover that her father were still conducting his experiments. So Posing as Janice she invited Professor Layton to the opera to save her father from stealing the life of Amelia, or anyone else's. She was an unvoluntary key piece in Descole plan to claim the Ambrosia ruins since she was the only one to know the last song needed to raise the ruins from the sea, hence his apparent support on her father quest. While it is never explained how Melina knew of the song from in the first place, its somewhat implied that she was a reincarnation of the last queen of Ambrosia. In the end she chose to leave Janice's body, leaving this world at last.
Amelia Ruth[edit]

Amelia is a chess champion who was given a free ticket to the opera by Oswald Whistler. She was hoping to save her grandfather from death. However, instead of the prize of Eternal Life, Oswald wanted her body to place Melina's memories in. In the end she was last seen with flowers on the tomb of her grandfather.
Randall Ascot[edit]

Randall Ascot is an old friend of Hershel Layton. Randall was the person who sparked the interest of archeology in Layton, but, during his long-awaited first expedition into the Azran civilization's ruins of Akbadain, one misstep opened a giant chasm. Despite Layton's best efforts, Randall fell in the chasm and was believed by everyone to have died. In reality, he was transported to safety by an underground river, but the shock leaft him amnesiac. Randall washed up in the village of Craggy Dale and lived there until Descole sent him a letter, refreshing his memory and tricking him into believing that Henry Ledore, his former butler, had used his disappearance to steal his life and his love interest, Angela, from him.
In the events of The Miracle Mask, Randall follows up on Descole's scheme of destroying the desert city of Monte d'Or in order to take revenge on Henry. Under the guise of the Masked Gentleman, an apparently supernatural being, he supposedly uses the Azran's Mask of Chaos to bring disastrous "miracles" (which were really illusions) throughout the city. The Masked Gentleman's identity remains a mystery until he kidnaps Luke and suspends him high above the great hall of Reunion Inn. When Layton rescues Luke, the Masked Gentleman reveals himself to be Randall and sets off explosive devices around Monte d'Or, leaving the city on the edge of being consumed by the desert. Layton's quick action saves the city when the true treasure of the Azran reveals itself and Monte d'Or is raised above the sands.
With this crisis resolved, Layton clarifies things for Randall: Henry had never stolen anything from Randall but was instead working to prepare everyone for Randall's homecoming by preserving what was his, including Randall's mother, whom Henry had taken in and cared for. After the shock of Descole's deception being revealed, Randall sees the error of his ways and finally settles down with Henry and Angela. However, Descole's plans are successful as the activation of the ruins triggers the rise of the Infinite Vault of Akbadain, his true goal.
Henry Ledore[edit]

Henry and his family have worked for Randall for his entire life. Randall and Henry had always been very good friends, so much that Henry began to see Randall as his own brother. After Randall disappears, Henry never gave up hope that he would come back. It was this hope that drove him in the ruins where Randall disappeared. In his search he recovered the immense treasure previously uncovered by Layton and Randall, thus becoming very rich in a very short time but he never believed that that fortune was his but instead Randall's. Since her parents wanted Angela to marry, Henry used his new-found status to pretend himself interested in her hand and arranged a false marriage while he secretly along with Angela where endlessly waiting for Randall. He then spent a part of the fortune to found Monte d'Or, a place where he could safely safeguarding Randall's inheritance and loved ones until he came home.
Angela Ledore[edit]

Angela Ledore is a friend of Hershel Layton and Randall Ascot's love interest. She pretends to be married to Henry Ledore, but is really just waiting with him to see if Randall ever comes back. Once he does, the two get married (implied at end of game). At some point in the present day story, Descole abducts her and steals her identity, though this does not happen until after the player's first meeting with her, according to Layton. She is rescued by Layton, who also tells her to don a disguise of her own.
In the past, she and Layton are often exasperated with Randall's behavior. In fact, she does not approve of Layton and Randall going on the expedition to Akbadain together since her brother had disappeared during an expedition he himself was on.
Leon Bronev[edit]

Bronev is a corrupt archaeologist and secretly Layton and Descole's biological father. After he started investigating the Azran civilization with his wife, they were captured by the Targent, an evil organization bent on uncovering the ancient secrets of the Azran peoples. Hoping to free himself and his wife, Bronev became increasingly obsessed with his research, and after his wife's death, this obsession only worsened, causing his sons to be given up for adoption. Transformed in a merciless man, he quickly rose to power in Targent's ranks until he became its leader. At some point, Bronev took the role of Emmy's guardian, becoming her only known family. He is the primary antagonist of The Azran Legacy and therefore widely considered one of the main villains of the entire second game trilogy along with Descole. This is due to the ruthless manner in which Bronev pursues the Azran's legacy, blindly believing it to be a blessing for the humanity. It is not until it is too late that he realizes he has made a horrific mistake. After working with his sons, Luke, and Emmy to stop a sudden onslaught from a mobilized Azran sanctuary, he is arrested for his numerous crimes, not opposing any resistance. While Layton swears to never accept back his original name, Theodore Bronev, or recognize Leon as a father, he expresses hope to meet him again one day as a friend and colleague.
Aurora[edit]

Aurora is a mysterious girl who is the sole survivor and emissary the lost Azran civilization. Layton and friends find her trapped in ice at the start of The Azran Legacy.
Although she appears human, Aurora is really a synthetic being created by the Azran to judge mankind's worth. Initially amnesiac, she sets off on a journey around the world with Layton and his group, hoping to recover her memory, rediscover the Azran legacy, and protect it from the Targent. Only after she reassembles the key to the Azran sanctuary do her long-lost memories return to her, making her remember in her utter despair and true nature.
During her travels with Layton, Luke, Emmy, Sycamore, and Raymond, Aurora forms bonds with each and sees great potential in the human race. Unfortunately, Bronev's actions nearly erase this perception. Towards the end of The Azran Legacy, she snaps out of a trancelike state long enough to tell Layton how to deactivate the mobilized Azran sanctuary and its golem armies. Although doing so costs Layton, Luke, Emmy, Descole, and Bronev their lives, Aurora uses the device controlling the golems to resurrect the heroes. Shortly after this, she dissolves into nothingness because, as Layton and friends learn, she is also a golem and has fulfilled her duty. However, while she disintegrates, she expresses her hopes to one day be reborn as a human.
During the end credits of The Azran Legacy, one of the slides features Luke looking suspiciously at a mother strolling her baby. Both resemble Aurora, which may hint that Aurora's last-minute wish was granted.
Leonard Bloom[edit]
Leonard Bloom is an inexperienced but successful senior detective for Scotland Yard. Layton meets him in The Miracle Mask, wherein he develops a partnership with the professor. However, he is in truth a Targent agent who infiltrates in Scotland Yard. In The Azran Legacy, Layton finally exposes him, and though Bloom is arrested, he is released shortly after, as he is seen as a valuable resource for British intelligence.
Raymond[edit]
Raymond is a Scottish butler who pilots the Bostonius, the airship aboard which Layton's group travels in The Azran Legacy. He is the deeply loyal servant of Descole, accompanying him everywhere, even when Descole is hiding as Professor Sycamore.
