Space Channel 5 is a series a video games that debuted in Japan in late 1999, originally released as part of the Dreamcast. The series takes place in the distant future, during the 25th and 26th centuries, which follows Channel 5 reporter, Ulala, as she saves the galaxy from great threats, while also dealing with common enemies and rival reporters. The series also includes a large cast of characters, including is the series' secondary antagonist, Pudding, a reporter and guitarist from Channel 42 who enjoys the limelight, and Jaguar, a member of the Space Pirates whose overarching goal is to spread the "truth" around the galaxy.
The series is also home to several extra characters that are introduced as hostages and enemies in-games. The series also has some other familiar characters, including Pine (the chief of the Eastern Venus Space Police), Hoorg (a Morolian and host of Moro-Channel 5), Space Michael Jackson (the former chief of Channel 5), Chief Blank (the former chief and CEO of Channel 5), Roscoe (a reformed space dog with dancing talents), and Evila (a robot replica that copies Ulala's moves).
Main characters[edit]
Main characters serve a vital role in the Space Channel 5 series, whether they’re villains or heroes. Main characters are often the focus of a specific game, or the series overall, and frequently appear in most media of the series.
Ulala[edit]
Ulala[lower-alpha 1] is the main protagonist of the Space Channel 5 series. She is a reporter for Channel 5 studios and under the employment of her boss, Fuse. In the video games, Ulala stars on her titular show, Ulala's Swingin' Report Show, where she dances her way through reports across the Galaxy while defeating enemies and invasions along the way. She is briefly interrupted on-air at some points by her arch-nemesis and rival, Pudding, a reporter for Channel 42 who has a grudge and jealousy for the Channel 5 reporter. Ulala is a very kind and sweet-natured woman who has changed the image of the ideal reporter during the 25th century - unlike her rival Pudding - and has mastered the profession. Ulala was originally conceived and created Takashi Yuda, but was not originally created for the series.[1]
Throughout the events of Space Channel 5, Ulala is shown to be a newly-recruited reporter who takes on challenges by defeating the unwanted Morolians who showed up during the Morolian Invasion. She, however, is concurrently being bombarded and harassed by other reporters who have the same goal as her, but appear to be doing it for a more selfish reason. Ulala is eventually the one who saved the Morolians from being brainwashed and puts an end to the destructive invasion by means of her funky dance moves and the people she had helped along the way.
Ulala is voiced by Apollo Smile (1999-2014) and Cherami Leigh (2020-present). In the Japanese versions, she is voiced by Mineko Okamura (1999-present), who was originally credited as "Ulala" before revealing she was the voice behind the character in a 2020 interview.
Jaguar[edit]
Jaguar[lower-alpha 2], styled as JAGUAR!!! on television, and also known as Shadow during the Rhythm Rogue invasion, is a main character from the Space Channel 5 series, and the secondary antagonist of Space Channel 5: Part 2. A former reporter for Channel 5, Jaguar quit his journalism profession after suspecting his former boss of fabricating the truth, and became a broadcasting pirate in order to deliver the truth to the citizens across the galaxy. In 2489, he was responsible for saving Ulala's life when she was just 12-years old, shortly before he went rogue in pursuit of delivering the truth to the public.
Fuse[edit]
Fuse[lower-alpha 3] is a main and unseen character from the Space Channel 5 series who serves as the boss and instructor of Ulala. He usually comes off as strict but yet very professional, and sometimes bossy, but Fuse still cares for Ulala’s well-being. Fuse has been a part of Channel 5’s history for many years, and is usually seen controlling a Channel 5 spaceship during the events of Space Channel 5: Part 2. He helps to guide Ulala during her reports, and is the one who helps to confirm speculations or things in their surroundings. His mood often changes depending on how Ulala (or the player) respond to certain commands, often coming off as annoyed and irritating when she repetitively fails a boss battle.
Pudding[edit]
Pudding[lower-alpha 4] is a main character of the Space Channel 5 series. She is the secondary antagonist of the first two games and the overall deuteragonist who serves as Ulala's arch-rival and frenemy. Pudding, a former teen idol and icon of the galaxy, is a reporter for Channel 42 who stars as a reporter and guitarist on her reality show titled "Pudding's Rockin' Show." It doesn’t matter where she’s going, Pudding is always followed by her henchmen, or bodyguards, two fan boys of the idol who style themselves in unique outfits and have pink hair.
In the games, Pudding is the first boss and rival Ulala (the player) comes across, who seems to be interrupting Ulala's show, and this is the first time the character appears in the series as well. Throughout the first Space Channel 5, Pudding continuously attempts to beat Ulala to the scoops, as her arrogance repeatedly get in her own way. Because of her high ego, Pudding is eventually captured by the Morolians and Ulala attempts to save her. Although the end result (if Ulala saves the reporter or not) is determinate by the player, Pudding will later help Ulala and Jaguar take down Chief Blank and save the Morolians. In Space Channel 5: Part 2, Pudding's role and speaking lines are much more expanded, and eventually persuades Ulala to take part in a guitar battle, using her famous purple and white guitar. Later, Pudding will join Ulala, Michael, and the others in taking down Purge before he forces the whole galaxy to dance.
Hoorg[edit]
Hoorg is a supporting character in the Space Channel 5 series and a main character in Space Channel 5: Part 2. He served as the "Boss Morolian" during the leadership of Chief Blank during the Morolian Invasion, but was ultimately saved by Ulala and the other reporters, and moved to reporting and became the news anchor for the Moro-Channel 5 news.
Hoorg appears to be the biggest Morolian of all - fat and plump compared to most. He is the supposed leader of the morolians that reside in the Milky-Way
Blank[edit]
Chief Blank is the secret main antagonist of Space Channel 5 (1999) and a minor character in the alternate reality of the events of Space Channel 5: Part 2. He is a cruel leader who enjoys fabricating the truth for better ratings, resulting in the success of Channel 5. In 2489, he was responsible for destroying the spaceship that resulted in the deaths of everyone aboard, except for 12-year old Ulala, who was saved by Channel 5 employee, Jaguar. Suspecting something sketchy about Blank, Jaguar quit Channel and became a Space Pirate dedicated to delivering the truth to the universe, unlike his former boss. Blank is also an inventor, who has created several robots, including Evila — who he designed to be "The Ultimate Reporter" to assist in his fabrication. In 2499, ten years after destroying the spaceship, Blank brainwashes the Morolians, allowing them to invade the Milky-Way and force people to dance. This results in high ratings for Channel 5, but Blank's motives are ultimately exposed when Ulala destroys the monitor responsible for their erratic behavior. He eventually reveals to Ulala, Pudding, and Jaguar that fabricating the truth leads to better ratings — the presumably sole point of broadcast television. In his final move, he is knocked into deep space to prevent anymore wrongdoing to the galaxy.
Space Michael[edit]
Chief Space Michael Jackson[note 1] is a main character in Space Channel 5: Part 2, portrayed and voiced by the late Michael Jackson. First appearing in Space Channel 5 (1999), Michael was a hostage of the Morolians who served a vital role for Channel 5 and it’s name. During the events of Space Channel 5: Part 2, Michael's role is expanded and becomes one of the leading characters. Rumor has it that he saved planet Earth from an alien invasion in 1999, five-hundred years ago in 2499. In the Japanese versions of the games, he is still voiced by Jackson, but Japanese subtitles appear on the screen whilst the character is speaking.
Space Michael appeared briefly in the 1999 video game, Space Channel 5. He was a hostage of the Morolians and could be saved by Ulala if she succeeds. After the demise of the destructive Chief Blank, Space Michael took over as the Chief of Channel 5 Studios sometime thereafter. In Space Channel 5: Part 2, after Ulala fights off Pine and her backups Lily and Mimi, Michael calls Ulala with urgent news — informing his friend that the Rhythm Rouges are attacking Channel 5's base. Fuse orders Ulala to return to the station and save their headquarters, where she finally finds Space Michael being forced to dance by Shadow. When she finally saves him from Shadow, they continue to take the elevator down and run into Purge, where he helps to sing him off. He would later help Ulala and her friends defeat the Rhythm Rogues, Shadow, and Purge, with his singing talents and vocals.
The creation of the character began near the very end of development for Space Channel 5 (1999) when Michael Jackson himself discussed interest and love for the game, and asked to be part of it. Agreeing, the developers and artists created a character model representing Jackson and dubbed the character "Space Michael." Because he was a last-minute addition, Space Michael only appeared briefly in the last level with one line, and a few of Jackson's signature "WHOOO!" sounds. Still interested in the project, he reappeared in its 2002 sequel with a much larger role and a significant player character during the fourth and fifth levels. Jackson also motion captured the dance moves and sequences of his character in both games.
Due to Michael Jackson's death in 2009, the character was cancelled out of respect. In the fictional universe, it is unknown what happened to Space Michael and is assumed he is either deceased or missing. A song composed by Michael Jackson made an appearance in Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash!, but all of his vocals were removed and the song was revised.
Evila[edit]
Evila, also known as "The Ultimate Reporter," is a main antagonist in Space Channel 5 (1999) and one of the final bosses in the game. She is the robotic copy of the ideal reporter, which happens to be Ulala, who was created by Blank in order to brainwash the public into madness and to feed them false and over-dramatized information. She has been dubbed a puppet and a reporter without soul. During the events of Space Channel 5: Part 2, Evila is copied into several other identical robots, known as the Evila Security Bots, to protect Channel 5 Studios from threatening forces.
As an overall minor character in the series, Evila has remained one of the most popular characters of the series, and a Sega character as a whole. Her outfit made a cameo appearance in the video game Chaos Heroes Online.[2]

In the game, the two recruits must follow Ulala as they discover the true meaning behind the corrupt Morolians, now under the alias "Othermoros". Valala makes frequent appearances within the Space Channel 5 video games, and would later reappear in the 2004 video game, Sega Superstars, as one of the hostages during the Space Channel 5 mini game. Like his "father," Purge Junior seeks to create his own TV show in hopes of forcing the whole galaxy to dance. Purge Junior is also the leader of the Rhythm Rogues in this alternate timeline.
