List of Super Mario 64 glitches

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Following is a list of glitches found in Super Mario 64, which includes both glitches that can be achieved by human players and glitches that require TAS to perform. Many of these are exploited in speedruns of the game, or in challenges such as the A button challenge.

List[edit]

Name Description TAS only?
Backwards Long Jump[1] Due to a lack of a negative speed cap, if Mario is in a location where he can instantly land from a long jump, a lot of negative speed can be built up and used to clip through walls or navigate levels quickly. Sometimes
Bomb Clip[2] A bob-omb is caught just before it explodes, pushing Mario backwards and through the gate to collect the star "Behind Chain Chomp's Gate". These bloated bob-ombs can be used in other strategies, such as entering the top of the pyramid in shifting sand land without standing on the four pillars, a strategy know as "pillarless". No
C-up Slide[3] If the user presses the C-up button before landing on certain slopes, they can build up significant amounts of speed, which can be either negative or positive depending on the way that the slope is slid on. No
Cannonless[4] The name given to multiple strategies for collecting stars quickly, by removing the need to open and shoot from a cannon. These include:
  • Performing an elaborate setup to collect the star "Blast Away the Wall" in "Whomp's Fortress" by falling against the wall in a precise way.
  • Using a long jump followed by a wall kick from the ship in "Jolly Roger Bay" to collect the star "Blast to the Stone Pillar"
No
Carpetless A notoriously difficult strategy to get the "The Big House in the Sky" star in "Rainbow Ride" without using the carpet. It involves holding an exploding bob-omb, jumping over large gaps, before performing 2 subsequent glitchy wall kicks to reach the to of the house. It has only ever been performed by 2 people without savestates: Mikko[5] and Xiah.[6] No (but nearly)
Glitchy Wall Kick[7] A wall kick that allows Mario to jump off the corner of a wall, and continue in the same direction as before. This is often only possible on a single frame in a very precise position, and is never used in normal speedruns of the full game. No (but nearly)
Hyperspeed methods[8] By repeating many frame-perfect actions, one can build up large amounts of positive speed. Examples include:
  • Hyperspeed Wall Kicks (HSWK)
  • Hyperspeed Walking (HSW)
  • Shell Hyperspeed
  • Hyperspeed Punching (HSP)
Yes
Parallel universes[9] Because Mario's position is a floating point number, and his position used for floor detection is converted to a signed short, which overflows, there is an effectual textureless, objectless copy of the map that iterates every 65535 units, Navigating these "Parallel Universes" or PUs is very difficult, but can allow for near-instant navigation to very precise locations. Yes
