Main Characters[edit]
Shaun Murphy[edit]
Shaun Murphy (portrayed by Freddie Highmore) is an autistic surgical resident at San Jose St. Bonaventure Hospital. Initially seen as a risk by the board members of the hospital, particularly by Marcus Andrews. During his residency Shaun has been the best when it comes to medical procedures, however he lacks social skills. In season one, Shaun begins his first year where against all odds he became admired and impressed his co-workers and superiors.
Neil Melendez[edit]
Neil Melendez (portrayed by Nicholas Gonzalez) was an attending cardiothoracic surgeon and resident supervisor. In season one, he is engaged to Jessica Preston but as the season progresses they grow apart due to Jessica's desire to not have kids leading to their eventual break up. In season two, Neil develops feelings for his fellow co-worker Audrey Lim and begin dating, however their relationship eventually falls apart when Lim is elected chief of surgery making her his both. In the third season, he begins to form a friendship with his resident Claire and eventually they develop romantic feelings towards each other but in the end, Melendez dies in the third season finale from injuries caused during an earthquake and in his last moments he and Claire admit their feelings for each other.
