While most elections in American history feature different candidates from elections prior, there are notable exceptions to this rule. Incumbent presidents are often re-nominated by their party in the subsequent election, while nominees that have lost in the past are seldom re-nominated. As such, at least one major party nominee will often be different from the previous election. In seven distinct presidential elections, however, the major nominees from the prior election "rematched" in the subsequent election, whether by direct re-nomination or the founding of third parties.
