Dreamgirls is a 2006 American musical drama film written and directed by Bill Condon and jointly produced and released by DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures. Adapted from the 1981 Broadway musical of the same name by composer Henry Krieger and lyricist/librettist Tom Eyen, Dreamgirls is a film à clef, a work of fiction taking strong inspiration from the history of the Motown record label and one of its acts, The Supremes. The story follows the history and evolution of American R&B music during the 1960s and 1970s through the eyes of a Detroit, Michigan girl group known as the Dreams and their manipulative record executive.
Dreamgirls received eight nominations at the 2007 Academy Award , winning 2: Best Supporting Actress (Jennifer Hudson), Best Achievement in Sound Mixing. At the Golden Globe Awards, Dreamgirls was nominated in five categories and won 3 awards, including Best Motion Picture - Musical or Comedy. It received eight NAACP Image Award nominations, and was also named as one of the American Film Institute's top ten films of 2006.
Dreamgirls also garnered 3 nominations at the SAG Awards, including Best Ensemble. The BAFTA Awards gave the film two nominations and one award for Best Supporting Actress for Jennifer Hudson. Dreamgirls also received a record eleven Black Reel Award nominations, and won six of the awards, among them Best Film. Accolades
