Here are listed in chronological order films, series, soap operas, and musicals that in some way contain the so-called spiritist phenomena. Some of them were based on spiritist books or on prominent personalities of the Spiritist Doctrine.

Films[edit]

  • Joelma 23º Andar (1979), a Brazilian film directed by Clery Cunha and starring Beth Goulart, based on the work "Somos Seis", psychographed by Francisco Cândido Xavier. It is the first in the country with a spiritist theme and the only one that depicted the Joelma Building fire that left 179 dead and over 300 injured (February 1, 1974).
  • O Médium (1983), a Brazilian film directed by Paulo Figueiredo, narrates the story of Adriano Jordão, a doctor aided spiritually in his surgeries.
  • Ghost (Ghost: Do Outro Lado da Vida - 1990) is an American romantic film, directed by Jerry Zucker and written by Bruce Joel Rubin. Starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore, and Whoopi Goldberg. It won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay and Best Supporting Actress. In 2010, a Japanese remake of Ghost titled Ghost: In Your Arms Again (ゴースト もういちど 抱きしめ たい, Gōsuto Mouichido Dakishimetai) was released.
  • O Espiritismo - De Kardec aos Dias de Hoje (1995), a Brazilian film with Ednei Giovenazzi as Allan Kardec and narrated by Aracy Balabanian, provides an overview of the basic precepts of Spiritist Doctrine and its contribution to the progress and happiness of human beings. It covers the works that compose the Codification of Spiritism by Kardec, as well as the Spiritist Movement at the time the film was released.
  • The Sixth Sense (1999) is an American psychological horror film written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan. It tells the story of Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment), a troubled and isolated boy who is able to see and communicate with the dead, and a disturbed child psychologist (Bruce Willis) who tries to help him. The film was nominated for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
  • Yesterday's Children (Minha Vida na Outra Vida - 2000), an American film based on the autobiographical book by Jenny Cockell. The film tells the story of Jenny (Jane Seymour), a woman who has visions and dreams of her past incarnation as Mary, an Irish woman who died in 1932 at the age of 37. Intrigued, Jenny travels from the US to Ireland in search of her children from her previous incarnation.
  • The Others (Os Outros - 2001) is a Spanish-French-American suspense film directed by Alejandro Amenábar, with Nicole Kidman in the lead role. Although it is not a film entirely in line with the principles of the doctrine, it portrays a house considered to be haunted by mediumistic phenomena with physical effects, as well as depicting the mediumship of psychography and clairvoyance.
  • Just Like Heaven (E se fosse verdade... - 2005) is an American romantic comedy film with spiritist themes (out-of-body experience), starring Reese Witherspoon, Mark Ruffalo, and Jon Heder. It is based on the book Et si c'était vrai by Marc Levy. Bollywood released the film I See You with a similar story.
  • Eurípedes Barsanulfo - Educador e Médium (2006) is a Brazilian documentary film directed by Oceano Vieira de Melo and narrated by actor Lima Duarte. It tells the story of Eurípedes Barsanulfo, a prominent figure in Spiritism and School Education in Brazil.
  • Bezerra de Menezes - O Diário de um Espírito (2008) is a Brazilian film directed by Glauber Filho and Joe Pimentel. It narrates the story of Bezerra de Menezes, the "doctor of the poor". During its 27 weeks in theaters, from August 2008 to March 2009, it was seen by more than 500,000 viewers.[1]
  • Passageiros (English title: Passengers) is a 2008 suspense film starring Anne Hathaway and Patrick Wilson, directed by Rodrigo García.[2]
  • A Christmas Carol (English title: A Christmas Carol - 2009) is a US animated 3D Christmas comedy-drama film written and directed by Robert Zemeckis. It is an adaptation of the story of the same name by Charles Dickens and stars Jim Carrey in a variety of roles, including Ebenezer Scrooge as a young man, middle-aged, and old, as well as the three spirits that haunt and enlighten Scrooge.[3]
  • The Lovely Bones (English title: The Lovely Bones - 2009), a British-New Zealand-American film directed by Peter Jackson, based on the homonymous book by Alice Sebold. The plot follows the story of a girl who, after being murdered, helps her father solve the crime and struggles to accept her own passing.
  • Chico Xavier (2010), a Brazilian film starring Nelson Xavier and Ângelo Antônio. It tells the biography of the most famous and acclaimed Brazilian medium, Francisco Cândido Xavier, and reached an audience of 3.5 million in theaters.[1] The film was later adapted into a miniseries by Rede Globo and aired between January 25 and 28, 2011.
  • Nosso lar (2010), a Brazilian film directed by Wagner de Assis, based on the homonymous book psychographed by Francisco Cândido Xavier, depicts life after death in the spiritual colony called Nosso Lar. It was distributed by 20th Century Fox and has a soundtrack composed by Philip Glass. It reached an audience of over 4 million in theaters.[4]
  • As Cartas Psicografadas por Chico Xavier (2010), a Brazilian documentary film directed by Cristiana Grumbach, showcases the testimonies of families who received news from their deceased loved ones through letters psychographed by Francisco Cândido Xavier. It was selected to participate in the competitive exhibition of the 3rd Paulínia Film Festival, the 38th Gramado Film Festival, and the 5th Ouro Preto Film Festival.[5]
  • O Último Romance de Balzac (2010), a Brazilian film directed by Geraldo Sarno, based on the work by psychologist Osmar Ramos Filho titled "O Avesso de um Balzac Contemporâneo," which consists of a positive analysis of the psychographed book "Cristo Espera por Ti" attributed to the spirit of Honoré de Balzac.[6]
  • As Mães de Chico Xavier (2011), a Brazilian film directed by Glauber Filho and Halder Gomes, with a screenplay by the same directors based on the book "Por Trás do Véu de Ísis" by Marcel Souto Maior. It tells the story of three mothers who, after losing their children, turn to Francisco Cândido Xavier in the hope of receiving messages from the spiritual plane.
  • Hereafter (2011), an American film directed by Clint Eastwood, portrays Matt Damon as a medium who struggles to cope with his gift, and Cécile de France as a journalist who undergoes a near-death experience in the 2004 tsunami.
  • O Filme dos Espíritos (2011), a Brazilian film loosely based on "O Livro dos Espíritos" (the first work of Spiritist Codification). It tells the story of psychiatrist Bruno Alves (Reinaldo Rodrigues), who, after losing his wife to cancer, becomes completely devastated and suicidal until he comes into contact with "O Livro dos Espíritos" and embarks on a journey to find happiness through the understanding of spiritual life through Spiritism.
  • E a Vida Continua... (filme) (2012), a Brazilian film directed by Paulo Figueiredo, based on the homonymous book psychographed by Francisco Cândido Xavier. It narrates the journey of the couple Ernesto and Evelina after death.
  • Cloud Atlas (2012), an American-German film directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski and Tom Tykwer, which, although not entirely in line with the doctrine, promotes some principles adopted by it: immortality of the soul, reincarnation, law of cause and effect, law of progress, and plurality of inhabited worlds. It also addresses other issues related to Spiritism, such as spiritual obsession.[7]

TV Series[8][edit]

  • Medium (2005), produced by NBC, features the main character utilizing her mediumship to assist a district attorney in solving crimes. The series is based on the life of American medium Allison DuBois, primarily on her book Don't Kiss Them Good-Bye.[9]
  • Ghost Whisperer (2005), produced by CBS, revolves around the main character, a medium who helps spirits with "unfinished business" cross over to the "light." The series is based on the activities of American medium James van Praagh, one of its producers.
  • A Gifted Man (2011), produced by CBS, portrays a renowned surgeon attempting to change his personality after he starts interacting with the spirit of his deceased ex-wife.[11]

Telenovelas[edit]

  • "O Profeta" (1977), produced by the defunct TV Tupi, also remade by TV Globo (see O Profeta (2006)), portrays the main character as a medium who can predict the future.[13]
  • "Anjo de Mim" (1996), produced by TV Globo, aims to show reincarnation and past life therapy from a spiritualist perspective.[12]
  • "Alma Gêmea" (2005), produced by TV Globo, narrates the story of a couple whose love relationship transcends multiple reincarnations.[13]
  • "Escrito nas Estrelas" (2010), produced by TV Globo, explores several spiritualist themes such as reincarnation, the evolution of spirits, and mediumship.[14]
  • "Amor Eterno Amor" (2012), produced by TV Globo, prominently features Spiritism, with numerous scenes depicting mediumistic practices.[15]
  • "Além do Tempo" (2015), produced by TV Globo, explores Spiritist themes such as reincarnation.
  • "Espelho da Vida" (2018), Globo network soap opera.

Musical[edit]

Ghost, The Musical is a musical with a book and screenplay by Bruce Joel Rubin and music and lyrics by Dave Stewart and Glen Ballard. Based on the 1990 film of the same name, the musical premiered at the Manchester Opera House in Manchester, England, in March 2011. It subsequently opened in London's West End on July 19, 2011, and ran until October 2012. The Broadway premiere took place in New York City, United States, in April 2012, and concluded on August 18, 2012. The musical has been on tour in the United Kingdom and the United States since 2013. In 2014, the musical will have a production in Brazil.[16]

2009, Launch of the Spiritist Audiovisual Nucleus (NAVE) in Goiânia (GO), with the objective of producing audiovisual materials with spiritualist themes, fostering the creation of groups with this interest, and organizing video exhibitions with spiritualist themes.

2011, 1st Transcendental Film Festival in Brasília, coordinated by Lucas de Pádua.

2016, Launch of the Spiritist Art Program on FEBTV and the website www.artespirita.com.br Archived 2018-02-03 at the Wayback Machine for the promotion of audiovisual art.
