List of fictional cetaceans
Cetaceans (from Latin: cetus, lit. 'whale', from Ancient Greek: κῆτος, romanized: kētos, lit. 'huge fish')[1] are fully aquatic, marine mammals constituting the infraorder Cetacea. Whales, dolphins, and porpoises are popular cetaceans in the media. They are often portrayed as blowing water out of their blowholes. Whales are often portrayed as slow-moving gentle giants (although older media often depicts them as monsters who swallow ships), and a species of whale, narwhals, are often portrayed as mysterious and desirable and are often depicted as being unicorn-like. Dolphins are often portrayed as being friendly and playful animals (or sometimes evil as an overturn, but killer whales are almost always depicted as evil). Porpoises, on the other hand, aren't seen often enough in media to have an official stereotype. All cetaceans in general are portrayed as being very smart creatures, sometimes sapient. The Hartford Whalers and Miami Dolphins are professional sports teams with cetaceans as their mascots.
