List of illegal live imports to Australia

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

This is a list of illegal animals to be imported into Australia without a specialised zoo license.

Mammals[edit]

No hedgehogs are in the country, but this particular species is a banned import due to exotic diseases (including ebola) and is listed illegal under the Biosecurity Act 2015

Reptiles[edit]

The species of snake was banned due to illegal importation and sale as pets.

In Australia, these turtles were common pets until they became pests and still exist countrywide today.

Boa constrictors can be found at many zoos, generally imports from Argentina or Chile.

These species could be found in pet stores until 1999. They were banned as pet imports to Australia in 1999.

Most of these lizards are allowed into the country. But these ones are banned from entering the country.

Amphibians[edit]

Australia has a huge cane toad problem and doesn’t want it to expand. The government says they impact native species and domesticated animals. The toads were introduced in 1935 and in 1940 had spread through parts of the Queensland coast, such as to Bundaberg, Cairns, Weipa and some sugar cane fields in the eastern area of the Northern Territory. They escaped south and now are found naturally anywhere north of Grafton, New South Wales. ‘One-offs’ have been found south. They are virtually illegal pets in the nation. See cane toads in Australia for more.

Like most toads around the nation are pests. This species was banned in 2016 by the government.

Birds[edit]

No birds are on the ‘Most Unwanted’ list in Australia yet. However in 1950, importing macaw parrots was limited and increased again in 1990. The largest collection of macaws is at Ashmore Palms, Queensland on the Gold Coast.
