The Matterhorn is an iconic landmark of Zermatt, Breuil-Cervinia and Valais and one of the natural symbols of Switzerland and Europe, its regular and pyramidal shape making it among the most recognisable mountains in the world.[2][3] Its steep faces and the fear it inspired in mountain climbers of the 19th century made it one of the last great Alpine peaks to be climbed. The first successful but deadly ascent had a large resonance in the media of the times, giving the Matterhorn the reputation of a dangerous and inaccessible mountain. The Matterhorn has then become a reference to artists, illustrators and designers.

Politics[edit]
- In 2012, the Swiss federal popular initiative "to end the invasive construction of second homes" ("Franz Weber initiative") to reduce urban sprawl by limiting the number of holiday cottages was accepted by 50.6 percent of voters.[4] The main campaign poster showed a montage of the Matterhorn being completely surrounded and swallowed by residential buildings.[5]
- In 2014, Germany's right-wing NPD (National Democratic Party) called for a referendum on immigration, citing Switzerland as an exemple with a poster of the Matterhorn.[6][7]
- In 2017, in Switzerland, a referendum was held against the Energy Strategy 2050, aiming at increasing renewable energy use. The main campaign poster was the Matterhorn (among other Swiss symbols) covered with solar panels and wind turbines.[8]
- In 2017, Germany's right-wing AfD (Alternative for Germany) used the image of the Matterhorn for a political campaign displaying the motto "take your country back". The image was later removed after the AfD being heavily mocked and criticized for using a non-German symbol for their nationalist campaign.[9][10]

- The Dragonspine mountain in Genshin Impact was designed with reference to the Matterhorn.[35] On 29 December 2021, the developers announced a web event where participants could help light up a real-life model Teleport Waypoint in the alps of Matterhorn and create souvenir cards that would be randomly selected to be hung on the top of the alps.[36] On 9 January 2022, it was announced that the milestone had been reached and they would light up the Teleport Waypoint on January 13.[37]

With all this tremendous emphasis it is not surprising to find that mountains elsewhere, of similar steep, clean, pyramidal lines and similarly isolated, should be likened to it and dubbed the 'Matterhorn' of their particular country, district or range. There is perhaps one other consideration involved. The Matterhorn long enjoyed a reputation for inaccessibility, such that many mountainers would not even attempt it. A mountain might earn its sobriquet on the grounds that it looked difficult or impossible to climb, a category into which many columnar-type mountains might also fall.
