As of 2018, Rockford has 16 buildings that are over 100 feet tall; most are utilized for public housing. Many are centrally located to the downtown region, close to the Rock River.

Rockford's buildings are short when compared to those in Chicago. In smaller towns, land is cheaper, demand is less, and the increased costs of high rise construction are not supported by the market.[3]
