List of tornadoes with confirmed satellite tornadoes
This article is a list of tornadoes that had at least one confirmed satellite tornado. A satellite tornado is one that revolves around a larger, primary tornado and interacts with the same mesocyclone. Satellite tornadoes occur apart from the primary tornado and are not considered subvortices; the primary and satellite are considered to be separate tornadoes.
List[edit]
Potential satellite tornadoes list[edit]
This is a list of tornadoes that potentially had satellite tornadoes, but never had any confirmed.
F#/EF# | Date | Location | Fatalities | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
F3 | June 8, 1951 | Corn, Oklahoma | 0 | Tornadoes of 1951#June 8 – This is officially documented as a large F3 tornado, but photographs of the event show two distinct slow-moving tornadoes from one storm. The larger one hit Corn directly, causing major damage, although there were no casualties thanks to ample warning of the storm's approach. Grazulis rated the main tornado F4. The other tornado, which is undocumented, caused damage west of Corn before dissipating; this tornado was rated F2 by Grazulis, who noted that the tornado may have been anticyclonic.[1][74][75] |
EFU | June 16, 2009 | N of Menno, South Dakota | 0 | Tornadoes of 2009#June 15–16 – A large tornado and possible satellite tornado were observed and documented by the TWISTEX research team.[76] The tornado itself had no reported damage, but the associated winds on the south side of the tornado damaged a few buildings, trees, and signs in town.[77] |
EF2 | May 7, 2019 | SSW of New Cordell, Oklahoma | 0 | An EF2 tornado caused damage from north-northeast of Hobart to south-southwest of Cordell,[78] while a second simultaneous EFU tornado occurred near Cordell. Storm chasers were unable to discern whether this was a tornado along a parallel path or a satellite tornado. No damage was reported.[79] |
EF4 | December 10, 2021 | SSW of Dawson Springs, Kentucky | 57 | 2021 Western Kentucky tornado — A long-tracked, wedge tornado that tracked 165.6 miles (266.5 km). South-southwest of Dawson Springs, Chris Conley, a storm chaser for ABC News’ WEHT photographed a possible satellite tornado associated with the parent tornado. The satellite remains unconfirmed by the National Weather Service.[80][81][better source needed] |
EF3 | April 12, 2022 | Williamson County, Texas and Bell County, Texas | 0 (23 injuries) | [82] | Video evidence taken on the ground during the tornadic event, and areal footage of the damage track show the parent circulation produced at least 3 small, brief satellite tornadoes. Scattered damage points and small paths made it too difficult to determine which areas may have been impacted by each of these smaller tornadoes before the parent tornado formed. Because the satellite tornadoes all formed from the same parent circulation within a short time, they were considered one tornado.
F0 | September 26, 2022 | Canino, Italy | 0 | An F0 tornado caused minor damage to structures and ripped tents. The European Severe Storms Laboratory noted a “possible satellite funnel observed”.[83] |
EF3 | November 30, 2022 | Fruitdale and Tibbie, Alabama | 0 | Tornado outbreak of November 29–30, 2022 — Damage to multiple homes from a possible satellite tornado occurred just north of the tornado’s path, near the halfway point between Fruitdale and Tibbie. This damage was not surveyed by the National Weather Service.[84] |
