In 2021, the Seimas voted to erect a border barrier along Lithuania's border with Belarus to block non-European Union migrants from entering illegally, as more than 4,000 migrants entered that year.[1]
Background
Relationship between Belarus and Lithuania deteriorated in 2021 after Belarus diverted Ryanair Flight 4978 to Lithuania to detain an opposition activist, after which the European Union strengthened sanctions against Belarus. Lithuanian officials allege that Belarus was flying migrants to the border.[1]
