The Little Rock Fire Department provides fire suppression, emergency medical services, tactical rescue, Hazmat Operations, and other public safety services to the Capitol City of Little Rock, Arkansas. It is the largest fire department in the State, with 22 Stations, 4 Battalions, and just under 500 Firefighters.

Department Overview

Little Rock Fire Department consists of five divisions; these being Operations, Administration, Aircraft Rescue & Firefighting (ARFF), Fire Prevention & Investigations, and Training.

Operations Division

The Operations Division is the largest and is led by an Assistant Chief. It consists of the following:

  • 4 Battalions (1, 9, 11, and 23)
  • 21 Stations
  • 21 Engine Companies
  • 8 Ladder Companies
  • 6 Squad (EMS) Companies
  • 3 Water Rescue Companies (Swift Water)
  • 2 Brush Truck Companies
  • 1 Heavy Rescue (USAR) Company
  • 1 Hazmat Company
  • 1 Decon Company
  • 1 Rehab Company
  • Bomb Squad

Emergency Medical Services

Since a majority of Little Rock Fire Department's calls are related to medical emergencies, it requires all sworn members to be EMTs certified by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. While all Companies respond to medical emergencies, the Department has 6 Rescue Squads that are manned by EMTs to help respond more quickly in their respective districts. That being said, LRFD does not transfer patients and works with Little Rock Ambulance Authority (LRAA), known as Metro EMS (MEMS). MEMS is usually on the scene soon after the fire department and provides Advanced Life Support (ALS). [2]

Ranks Structure

The Ranks for the Department are as follows:

  • Fire Chief
  • Assistant Fire Chief
  • Battalion/Division Chief
  • Fire Captain
  • Fire Apparatus Engineer
  • Firefighter
  • Probationary Firefighter
