Liu Haowei (Chinese: 刘昊威; pinyin: liú hàowēi), a Chinese architect, graduated from the School of Architecture of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and is the founder of CAA architects[1]. Member of the Architectural Art Committee of the China Artists Association, an expert consultant of the Art Design Institute of the Central Academy of Fine Arts, a guest professor of the Ningbo Research Institute of Zhejiang University, and the "Person of the Year" of the Chinese version of GQ Magazine.

Personal Experience[edit]

Early Life and Education[edit]

Liu Haowei is an architect and an artist. He showed artistic talent at an early age. During middle school, Liu Haowei was admitted to the High School Affiliated to the Central Academy of Fine Arts. While in school, he founded a school magazine similar to "New Youth" and served as the editor-in-chief, and became the first-generation social and humanistic illustrator of "Sanlian Lifeweek".

During the same period, He was exposed to the works of Jules Verne, a French science fiction writer of the Romantic Era, whose imaginative vision of the future gave him the idea of creating a future world. He gradually became obsessed with becoming an architect, and during his university years, he chose to major in architecture at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and completed his studies with distinction.

Career Experience in Architecture

In 2006, Liu Haowei founded CAA architects , a Beijing-based practice with offices in New York and Hong Kong, which has developed a worldwide design practice and has led projects of various types and scales.

In 2018, he founded CAA LAB, the research and development institution of CAA architects[2]. In the same year, CAA LAB developed China's first design software based on AR technology - SZ App; in 2021, it launched the "Mars Housing Plan" aimed at exploring and innovating the second residence of human beings; in 2022, it founded META CAALAB.

Design Theory[edit]

Liu Haowei proposes the Neo-futuristic idea of Design For Tomorrow, integrating Oriental Humanism spirit to create adaptive, resilient and future-oriented designs. His strong intention is to combine Architecture and Art together, to conduct interdisciplinary design practice between society, ecology, media, and technology, and redefine how this two disciplines of Architecture and Art can impact on future cities in the era of sustainability and digital technology.

As a Chinese architect, oriental humanistic thoughts and philosophical views have always been the source of his creation, thus forming his unique design language; his design concept also revolves around the three dimensions of "life", "nature" and "future". He believes that architecture is an organic and dynamic living body, with a structure and organization similar to life forms. At the same time, he also advocated the naturalization of architecture, proposed the symbiosis mechanism between architecture and nature, created a pro-nature space system, aroused people's surreal imagination of nature extending to the cosmic dimension, and realized the integration and symbiosis of architecture, human and nature. In addition, deeply influenced by "The Neo-Futuristic City Manifesto", he proposed the pioneering urban concepts of Universe Traveling City, Reflected Vertical City, and Suspended City, showing a new futuristic design language and shaping the future "City of Tomorrow" , namely "Design for Tomorrow".
