LiveMe is a global live streaming and social platform. It enables users to live stream special moments, watch live broadcasts, and video chat with friends worldwide.[1]

History[edit]

In April 2016, LiveMe launched.[2]It is available for iOS.[1]

In April 2017, LiveMe Series-A funding with USD 60million from Matrix Partners China and IDG Capital.[3][4]

In October 2017, Liveme was among the top 10 social apps in the U.S. on Google Play in terms of user downloads, was among the top 35 social apps in the U.S. on Apple's App Store in terms of user downloads.[5]

In 2019, with the pursuit of being more independent and sustainable, LiveMe had a reconstruction of the whole company, and experienced an overwhelming operating pressure for a while.[6]

In 2020, the outbreak of Covid 19 pandemic set more fierce pressures on LiveMe internally and externally. LiveMe's employees are all over the world, and the raging epidemic made it difficult for them to continue their normal lives. And plenty of planned offline events could not be carried out due to continuous lockdown. LiveMe had to give more of its attention to taking care of its employees and keeping connected with the users.[6]

Controversies[edit]

In July 2020,the Indian Army banned LiveMe along with 89 other apps that it believes could be used to leak information to foreign intelligence agencies. The news comes in after the central government banned 59 Chinese apps nationwide that were allegedly prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.[7]However, the Government of India is not putting a ban on LiveMe on Google Play Store and Apple App Store.[8]
