LiveStories is a data communication software company based in Seattle. Founded in 2013 by Adnan Mahmud, the company's software combines data analysis, visualization, and web publishing features, targeted toward non-expert data users.[1] LiveStories' customers have previously included the U.S. Department of Defense and the city of Melbourne, Australia;[2] the company primarily serves public health departments in the United States.[3]
LiveStories’ customers use the software to visualize and provide context for their data, covering such topics as flu surveillance[4][5] and opioid overdoses.[6] In addition, LiveStories’ own analyses on public data has been reported by national media.[7][8][9][10]
History[edit]
Adnan Mahmud founded LiveStories in 2013. Mahmud said he was motivated by his experience growing up in Bangladesh, where he realized that poorly-understood data often held back governments and the people they serve.[11]
In 2013, the nascent company received a $75,000 grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to help another grantee, the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA), make better use of its data. This work provided early tests for the concept behind LiveStories.[12]
LiveStories took part in the 2014 Techstars Seattle startup accelerator.[13] After building a customer base of mostly public-sector organizations, the company raised $3 million in a 2016 funding round led by True Ventures.[14] In 2017, LiveStories received $10 million in Series A funding, led by Ignition Partners.[15]
Products[edit]
LiveStories offers three main products:
- LiveStory is an on-demand data report service.[16] Customers can purchase reports on various public health topics, which LiveStories’ staff assembles and publishes.
- LiveStudio enables customers to create and customize their own data reports with a WYSIWYG webpage builder.[17] LiveStudio users can create visualizations from their own data, or make use of LiveStories’ "Data Library" collection of public data for visualizations.
- LivePortal is a customizable data and visualization library.[18] Customers can combine and visualize multiple sources of data together onto a LivePortal, which their constituents and partners can explore.
