Logan L. Watts was born on January 11, 1988 in Round Rock, Texas, the son of Lester Clark Watts (deceased) and Vicki Watts, founder of Advanced 1, a telecommunications engineering company headquartered in Georgetown, TX.[2]

Watts became fascinated with the subject of psychology from a young age, consuming books about topics such as human learning and memory. For his middle school science fair project, he conducted an experiment investigating the influence of music on mathematical problem solving. His three brothers served as his research subjects. At the age of 14, his martial arts instructor encouraged him to become a junior coach, and Watts soon discovered he had a talent for teaching. Throughout high school, he taught classes at his church and was invited to speak at numerous events. At 18, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout[3].

After graduating from Round Rock Christian University in 2006, Watts enrolled at Abilene Christian University (ACU) with the intention of earning a Bachelor’s degree in Biblical Text and becoming a pastor. After three semesters, he dropped out and began working full-time as a computer drafter at Advanced 1. One year later, he returned to ACU as a business major and began dating Rebecca Frei, who later became his wife. During this time, he cofounded the band, Thus Far, with lead singer Alex Howard and released one album called “Bright Light”.[4] In a class designed to help students explore potential career options, Watts discovered the subject of industrial and organizational (I/O) psychology.

In 2010 he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology, graduating with honors alongside his original cohort at ACU. Two years later, he graduated with a Master’s degree from Middle Tennessee State University in I/O psychology under the mentorship of Dr. Mark Frame. His Master’s thesis was on the topic of gender differences in career aspirations.[5] In 2016, he earned his Doctorate of Philosophy degree at the University of Oklahoma with an emphasis in I/O psychology and a minor in quantitative research methods. Under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Mumford, he completed a second thesis on the topic of leadership development via reading stories and a dissertation on the topic of environmental influences on creativity.[6][7]

As of August 2017, Watts holds the title of Assistant Professor of I/O Psychology in the Weissman School at Baruch College, The City University of New York, where he is Director of the Leadership, Ethics, and Creativity Lab.[8]

Career[edit]

Watts specializes in the study of leadership, ethics, creativity, and narrative-based cognition. He has published numerous works on these topics, including 24 peer-reviewed articles, 8 book chapters, 6 technical reports, 14 peer-reviewed presentations at national and international conferences, and 18 presentations at regional and local conferences, as of August 2017.[9] He has instructed undergraduate and graduate students in courses such as research methods in psychology, business ethics, the psychology of leadership, and organizational behavior.

At MTSU, Watts received the Robert Prytula Memorial Scholarship Award and the William A. Kerr Award, which recognize research excellence in graduate school and the potential to make significant contributions to scientific psychology.[10]

During his doctoral studies at OU, Watts was appointed to lead the Professional Ethics Training - Responsible Conduct of Research (PET-RCR) program. The PET-RCR program is a two-day curriculum delivered to approximately 600 graduate students per year.[11] Watts was also appointed to lead a grant funded by the Office of Research Integrity investigating the effectiveness of ethics education programs.[12] In his final semester at OU, he received the Graduate Student Teaching Award and the Chuck Getty’s Award for Outstanding Research in Psychology. [13]

Watts has consulted on organizational issues with firms spanning a variety of industries, including automotive/transportation, energy, education, and social services. In March 2017, he cofounded Ethics Advantage, a consulting firm specializing in helping organizations build cultures that support ethical decision making.[14]
