Long Boi is a Mallard who lives on the York University campus. Due to his size and upright stance, he is seen as a “campus celebrity” by visitors and students.
Background
He was first seen on the York University campus in 2018, and it was hypothesised that he was a lost or discarded pet [1]. It was initially thought he was the largest mallard and that he was “just over one metre tall.” However, following a measurement and genetic study it was proven to be a misconception. “Long Boi” was discovered to be a cross between a wild mallard and an Indian runner duck, a species known for its upright stance and towering height, which may have exaggerated his size. It was also discovered that he was not one meter tall, but rather had a height of 76 centimetres[2].

Due to his remarkable size, especially compared to the other mallards, students began to refer to the duck as “Long Boi”, and he was seen as a “local celebrity”[4]. Following his appearance on campus, an Instagram fan page was created to share photos of the duck. This account rose quickly in fame and led to Long Boi being known globally [5].
