This means that papers written by Moroni do not count towards notability, neither do biographical pages published by universities etc that he belongs to. Lorenzo Moroni (13 July 1976) is an Italian biomedical engineer in the field of Regenerative Medicine. His research focuses on developing new biofabrication technologies to generate libraries of architected materials to repair and regenerate damaged cells, tissues, and organs. The primary focus of Moroni’s research lies at the crossroads of life, chemical, and technical sciences.[1]. Since 2022, Moroni is professor in Biofabrication for Regenerative Medicine at Maastricht University[2] and Scientific Director of the MERLN Institute[3].

Biography

Early career

Lorenzo Moroni earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees[4] at Polytechnic University of Milan. He completed his PhD cum laude[5] in the Tissue Regeneration department of at Twente University in 2006. After a postdoctoral period at Johns Hopkins University and at the Musculoskeletal Cell & Tissue Bank of Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute, he returned to Twente University in 2009 for a postdoctoral fellowship on the team of Clemens van Blitterswijk, which was followed by a tenure-track position[6].

MERLN Institute at Maastricht University

In 2014, Lorenzo Moroni moved to Maastricht University to establish the MERLN Institute for Technology-Inspired Regenerative Medicine[7]. Moroni was appointed in 2016 as Professor of Biofabrication in the Complex Tissue Regeneration department, followed by appointments as Department Chair and Vice-Director of the Institute.

Since 2022, Moroni is the Scientific Director of the MERLN Institute, where six ERC grants have been awarded between 2021–2025 to its Principal Investigators[8][9][10][11][12].

Scientific career

Publications

Lorenzo Moroni has published approximately 300 scientific articles[13][14]. Such publications include "3D Niche-inspired scaffolds as a stem cell delivery system for the regeneration of the osteochondral interface"[15], "4D printed shape morphing biocompatible materials based on anisotropic ferromagnetic nanoparticles"[16], and "Janus 3D printed dynamic scaffolds for nanovibration-driven bone regeneration"[17]. His publications have been cited over more than 20,000 times and his h-index is 80[18].

Lorenzo Moroni’s research has resulted in more than 10 patents[19].

Recognition and Awards

Lorenzo Moroni has received many awards over the course of his career, including the Jean Leray Award[20] from the European Society of Biomaterials as well as mid-career awards from the International Society for Biofabrication[21] and Tissue Engineering & Regenerative Medicine International Society (TERMIS)[22]. His research has been funded by various grants, including the ERC Starting[23], NWO Vici[24], and ERC Advanced[25]

Consortium Leadership

Lorenzo Moroni currently leads several international scientific consortia projects, including PULSE[26] funded by the European Innovation Council and SCREENED[27] funded by EU Horizon 2020.
