Lost Boy ?
Lost Boy ? is an American indie rock band founded and led by multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Davey Jones, who started using the moniker for his solo home recordings before becoming active in the Brooklyn DIY scene.[1] Whether by himself or with a rotating lineup of friends, Jones self-released a number of LPs, EPs, and singles under the Lost Boy ? alias over the past decade, as well as 2015's Canned[2] and 2016's Goose Wazoo[3] on independent labels. With a lo-fi and DIY aesthetic, Lost Boy ?'s music ranges from experimental pop to punk rock, and the project has been described as "90's alt-rock revivalist"[4] and "lo-fi warbled pop punk"[5].
Davey Jones grew up in Suffolk County on Long Island[6], and was driven to songwriting by his exposure to New York alternative rock and hip hop radio stations.[7] Jones began Lost Boy ? as a "bedroom pop project" with a decidedly DIY approach[8], recording all the instruments and releasing all the material on his own. In 2011, the original full band lineup finished studio recordings with the intention of releasing their first proper full-length.[9] The end result became the USA USA EP on Old Flame Records, which would mark Lost Boy ?'s first official release, as well as an increase in touring and attention from the press.[10][11] In the period between 2011 and 2014, Jones continued to self-release home demos, live CD-Rs, and cassettes as Lost Boy ?, while also playing guitar in the Brooklyn bands TOONS[12] and Baked (appearing on the latter group's debut album, Debt).[13][14] By the time the Wasted EP came out on Exploding in Sound in May 2014[15], Jones had cemented a new lineup consisting of long-time collaborator Ryan Foster on guitar, RJ Gordon of Baked on bass, and Matt Gaffney of Le Rug on drums.[16] [17] This lineup embarked on a national tour supporting Titus Andronicus in fall 2013[18][19] and contributed to the band's debut studio LP Canned.[20] A little less than a year after Spin debuted opening track "Hollywood" to much acclaim,[21][22][23] PaperCup Music released Canned in March 2015, featuring eleven songs of "upbeat, fuzz-drenched guitar pop".[24] The following year saw the release of the band's sophomore LP, a loose concept album entitled Goose Wazoo, on Little Dickman Records.[25][26] The single "It Before" was ranked #3 on Consequence of Sound's top songs of the week[27], and the album received favorable reviews during end-of-year recaps.[28][29]
In between tours and recording sessions with Lost Boy ?, Davey Jones was also heavily involved in local bands such as The So So Glos, Holy Tunics, and Wicked Kind, and performed with other peers such as Bueno and Sharkmuffin.[30]
