Established by Spanish priests in 1650, the fabled "lost" Josephine de Martinique mine, known as the 'lost Josephine Mine,' was reputedly the richest gold mine ever discovered. However, its location was lost when in 1680 the Native American 'Pueblo' revolts against the Spanish drove them out of the area.[citation needed] The value of the gold remaining in the mine is reputed to be over 1.5 billion US dollars worth.
In 2008 a treasure hunter named Gary Holt discovered a shaft that he believes is the lost mine in the Hoyt's peak area of the Uinta mountains in Utah.[citation needed] However, the US Forest Service believes this shaft and its contiguous caverns are a natural formation. Gary Holt has extracted some calcite crystals from the tunnels that he believes will fund further exploration.
