Louis K. Scheffer
Louis K. Scheffer (b Aug 23, 1953) is an American engineer and scientist currently working on connectomics at Janelia Research Campus[1]. He is known for his work on connectomics, electronic design automation, and SETI.
Early life and education
Louis Scheffer received the B.S. and M.S. degrees from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, in 1974 and 1975, respectively, and his Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, Stanford, CA, in 1984.[2] His thesis advisors were Bill VanCleemput and Robert Dutton.
Career
Scheffer worked for Hewlett Packard (now Keysight) from 1975-1981, then helped found Valid Logic Systems where he worked from 1981 to 1991, when it was acquired by Cadence Design Systems. He worked there until 2008 when he joined Janelia Research Campus of Howard Hughes Medical Institute. At Cadence his main work was on electronic design automation. At Janelia, his main work has been on connectomics, the reconstruction and analysis of the nervous system. This work has focused on technical methodology for electron microscopy connectomics and analytical approaches to the analyses of connectomes. While Scheffer has focused on the Drosophila nervous system, his work is generally applicable to connectomics.
Other work
Scheffer has contributed to SETI, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, primarily in looking at the impact of advanced communications, including an article on machine intelligence for interstellar travel[3]. He has worked on the Pioneer Anomaly, a problem in deep space physics.[4] The logo on a chip he designed is sometimes used as an example of chip art.[5] He developed a key advance to programming in Malbolge, an esoteric programming language.[6] He has taught at Caltech, Stanford, and UC Berkeley.
