Early life
Velazquez was born into a Catholic family in the Bronx, NY on August 16, 1969, the son of Mildred and Louis Velazquez Sr. Velazquez began his education at Herman Ritter JHS, followed by Richmond Hill High School ('87), where he participated in fencing, gymnastics, basketball, and the cooperative program. He was accepted to Princeton and Harvard Universities but, due to financial circumstances, chose to enlist in the Marine Corps. Following a severe knee injury, he was discharged and went to work at First Boston Corp in Manhattan, New York City, where he completed his high school cooperative.
Martial arts, boxing and fitness
At the age of 11, he began boxing in underground gyms in the Bronx, needing to learn self-defense skills to survive. Training continued solely in boxing until his family moved to Queens, NY, where he met his martial arts instructor at a local Boys and Girls Club. He began martial arts training in 1984 under Louis Rebello, deceased, in the hybrid martial arts system called Rebello Martial Arts, which combines Tae Kwon Do, Jeet Kune Do, Jiu-Jitsu, and military combat training. Being a thin young man, his teacher recommended weight training, which became a lifelong passion and part of his lifestyle. He has been a member of the Jeet Kune Association, Okinawan Martial Arts Society, and has received various recognitions in martial arts throughout his life. Bodybuilding became a cornerstone of his life alongside martial arts, which led him into his professional wrestling career.[4]
Professional wrestling career
Velazquez began his professional wrestling career in Brooklyn, NY in 1987 at Gleason's Gym under the tutelage of Bobby Bold Eagle. He was introduced to the sport by Jim Hellwig, also a bodybuilder turned professional wrestler. His muscular physique, martial arts background, and boxing experience made this a natural career progression and path to earn extra income. He wrestled at various venues throughout the Northeast while maintaining a career in finance. In 1994, he was instrumental in creating the Ultimate Wrestling Federation in the Northeast, which changed its name to Ultimate Championship Wrestling in 1996. He wrestled with notable figures such as Jim "The Anvil" Neidhart, Bruce Hart, Tatanka, King Kong Bundy, and other prominent wrestlers of the era. In 1997, he was scheduled to wrestle Rocky Maivia (Dwayne Johnson) and Jim Hellwig (The Ultimate Warrior), but a back injury forced his retirement mid-1997.
