Lual A. Deng is a South Sudanese academic, economist, and politician. Born in 1949, he has held various significant positions throughout his career.

Education[edit]

Deng began his academic journey at the University of Khartoum, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in econometrics in 1973. He then pursued a master's degree in biostatistics from Alexandria University, which he completed in 1976. Following this, he obtained another master's degree in economics from Iowa State University in 1982. Deng furthered his education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in development economics in 1984.

Career[edit]

Deng's professional career is marked by his contributions as an economist and educator. He served as an assistant professor at the University of Wisconsin System from 1985 to 1986, focusing on economic statistics. He then worked at the African Development Bank from 1986 to 1989, followed by a stint at the World Bank from 1989 to 1991, where he continued his work in economic statistics.

Deng also played a crucial role in the political landscape of South Sudan. He served as an adviser to John Garang from 2003 to 2005, concentrating on economic statistics. Additionally, he has been involved in various national dialogue initiatives in South Sudan.
