Luca Lucchesi
Luca Lucchesi is an Italian filmmaker based in Germany. He is known for his close working relationship with Wim Wenders, with whom he has worked together on several projects including Lucchesi's feature debut A Black Jesus.[1]
Early Life
Lucchesi was born in Palermo in 1983.
He studied Law at the University of Palermo, where he studied for a Bachelor of Laws, LL.B., with a dissertation on Justice as Storytelling.[2]
During his studies he cultivated his passion for cinema and creative writing while producing numerous short films, TV programmes for university students[3] and directing staged trial-adaptations of Euripides Greek tragedies as part of the Department of Criminal Law curriculum.[4]
Career
Lucchesi has worked on several of Wim Wenders' films including: Palermo Shooting (2009), Il Volo (2010), Notes from a Day in the Life of an Architect (2012), Cathedrals of Culture (2014), Everything Will Be Fine (2015).[5][6]
Lucchesi's close working relationship with Wenders began when Lucchesi was initially hired as a translator for Palermo Shooting. Wenders took a liking to Lucchesi and hired him as his assistant director for his short film Il Volo.[7][8]
Other feature-films Lucchesi worked on include: Berg Fidel – Eine Schule für alle (2011), Schule, Schule - Die Zeit nach Berg Fidel (2014), Itchi: My Path (2017) and Deine Farbe (2018).[9]
Lucchesi built up his reputation in the Berlin Film Scene working on various feature films, commercials, and music videos in the roles of producer, cinematographer, editor, and assistant director.[10]
In 2017, Lucchesi's father's death brought him back to the Sicilian town of Siculiana, a turning point in both his life and career. When entering the church to pray for his late father, he met a group of African refugees in prayer at the foot of the statue of the black Jesus, which is highly revered in the town of Siculiana.[11] At this point he thought he "should try and get the sense of this town, and try and understand how a community can, in the real sense of the word, pray to a black Jesus but not feel a sense of empathy for people who look like that."[12] This investigation led to the film A Black Jesus, produced by Wim Wenders' production house, Road Movies.[13]

Lucchesi lives in Berlin.[14]
