The Luchsie lynx cat[1] (/lətʃsiː/) is a domestic cat breed created from a hybrid of the domestic cat (Felis catus) and the bobcat (Lynx rufus).
History
The first mentions of a hybrid breed of a domestic cat and a bobcat came from around 1949 in Sandy Creek, Texas, in a bobcat study from 1958.[2] After that, many other people claimed to have a hybrid.[3] There were reports about a Russian Blue tom who fought bobcats and mated with a female bobcat around the 1950s.
In the mid-1970s, advertisements about the hybrid started showing up in cat magazines and were often advertised with the Bengaleen.[4] The domestic cat used to mate the bobcat was an American Shorthair.[citation needed] The Luchsie name died out around 1979.
There have been more hybrids between cats and bobcats over the years, most notably Rocky, a Maine Coon hybrid.[5] A bobcat was captured but turned out to be a hybrid.[6]
Appearance
The Luchsie was a longhair with a lynxpoint pattern.[7] Their fur color was ranging from red and ruddy to tan and gray and even up to white.
