Lucifer Gunne is an alternative rock and punk rock group from Wellington, New Zealand, formed in March 2017 by singer Rory McDonald, guitarist Don MacKenzie and former drummer Henry Thomas. Troy Woods was the original bass player. Both Henry and Troy are now at Christchurch University.[1] Rory started writing music in 2015, releasing his first solo EP, "The Red King" mid-2017. Rory's vocals are inspired by the likes of Marilyn Manson, Kurt Cobain and Mike Patton.
Former drummer Taylor Johnston-Criscuola once played drums on stage with The Killers. After waiting outside Wellington’s TSB Arena with a sign saying he could play drums, he was called up during the show to play 'For Reasons Unknown'.[2][3]
The band's current line-up consists of Rory McDonald (Vocals/Bass), Don MacKenzie (guitar) and Steve Henwood (guitar).
Lucifer Gunne is managed under the label of PlasticGroove.[4][5]

History

Starting out solo, Rory McDonald worked on his first EP ‘The Red King’[6]. He had a whole band sound in mind, rather than a solo project. After the release of his EP he met Don MacKenzie and ex-drummer Henry Thomas in the crowd at a Pixies concert.
March 30th, 2017, saw Rory, Don, Steve and Henry play their first show at Valhalla, and since then they have been playing, performing and recording ever since. The line-up has changed recently with the departures of Henry Thomas and Taylor Johnston-Criscuola[7]

Bingo Fighter

Rory McDonald is also the bassist for Wellington band, Bingo Fighter[8]

Releases

Energenetic

Their latest single Energenetic had success in both Australia and New Zealand, with the music video being filmed on a rooftop in their home town of Wellington[9].
Lead vocalist Rory McDonald is influenced by artists including Mike Patton and Marilyn Manson, the latter being an inspiration for the band’s name. Review of Energenetic by Radio 13.[10] The single received lots of media coverage including Happy Mag[11] and Heavy Mag [12].
One of Rory's favorite moments comes from recording this single. He was woken up in the studio by the band eager to get the recording process finished. He took his first vocal takes after being asleep for over 2 hours, and he couldn't be happier with the final result.[13] Energetic was recorded at Elysian Studios, Paraparaumu, New Zealand.[14]

HRM

HRM was recorded in a studio in Levin. It was to be a part of the Ninth Hour EP but the EP was pulled as the quality and performances weren't great.

The Red King EP

The Red King was Rory's first EP, led more as a solo project before meeting the rest of the band members, former drummer Ben McHardy, Don MacKenzie and Steve Henwood.

Currently

Lucifer Gunne are currently recording their first official album.
