Lucy Joy Altus (born February 9, 2000) is an American mezzo-soprano. She is best known for her role as Marianne in the My Chemical Romance tour Long Live The Black Parade.
Biography
Lucy Joy Altus was born on February 9, 2000, in Manhattan, New York City. She was raised in a Jewish family on the Upper West Side. Altus attended The Beacon School, and participated in the National Children's Chorus as both a chorus member and soloist; during this time she also began studying voice with Scottish soprano Catherine Mazzone.[1] She later moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania for college, studying vocal performance with soprano Maria Spacagna at Carnegie Mellon University, where she graduated in 2022.[2] Altus returned to New York to complete a graduate degree in vocal performance at Juilliard, which she finished in 2024.[3] During this time she also participated in the Merola Opera Program in San Francisco for two summers.[4] Altus then joined the Bavarian State Opera in Munich as part of their opera studio.[5]
During the summer of 2025, Altus joined My Chemical Romance's Long Live The Black Parade tour, originating the role of Marianne. Marianne is a character invented by My Chemical Romance and Altus, who exists in the fictional dictatorship of Draag. In each concert, she sang the Draag national anthem, as well as "Mama" with the band.[6] Altus performed at several tour dates throughout the United States, and is expected to continue as Marianne in future performances on the tour; however, she is sometimes replaced by another opera singer, Sylvia, who is played by Charlotte Kelso.[7]
