Luis Ostrosky-Zeichner is a Mexican-born American physician, healthcare epidemiologist, and medical mycologist. He is Professor of Medicine and Epidemiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth Houston), where he serves as Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Chief Epidemiology Officer for Memorial Hermann Health System.[1]
He is known for his work on invasive fungal infections, antimicrobial stewardship, and healthcare-associated infections.[2]
Early life and education
Ostrosky-Zeichner was born in Mexico City, Mexico. He earned his medical degree from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), graduating with highest honors.
He completed residency training in internal medicine at the Instituto Nacional de la Nutrición Salvador Zubirán and a fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Texas–Houston Medical School and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Career
Ostrosky-Zeichner joined UTHealth Houston in 2002 and became Professor of Medicine in 2011. He has held leadership roles including Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Chief Epidemiology Officer for Memorial Hermann Health System.[3]
He has also served as Vice Chairman of Medicine for Healthcare Quality and Medical Director for Hospital Epidemiology and Antimicrobial Stewardship.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, he coordinated institutional response efforts at UTHealth Houston and contributed to regional public health strategies.[4]
He has been cited in media coverage as an expert on infectious diseases and outbreak response.[5]
Research
Ostrosky-Zeichner’s research focuses on invasive fungal infections, particularly candidiasis, as well as antimicrobial stewardship and healthcare epidemiology.
His work has contributed to antifungal diagnostics and therapeutics, including studies on beta-D-glucan assays and antifungal agents.[6]
He has also contributed to international clinical guidelines for fungal infections.[7]
Professional service
He has served as President of the Mycoses Study Group Education and Research Consortium and has held leadership roles in the Infectious Diseases Society of America.[8]
He has also served as an advisor to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and as a consultant to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
