From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Lukas Ruetz (* 1993) is an Austrian ski mountaineer[1], blogger, author, lecturer and avalanche expert[2].

Life

Ruetz lives in St. Sigmund in the valley of Sellraintal near Kühtai in Tyrol at an elevation of 1,500m[3]. The area of Sellraintal and Kühtai is considered to be one of the best mountain ranges for ski mountaineering in the Alps[3].

Publications

Lukas Ruetz began blogging about his mountain tours at the age of 18[4]. Ruetz became known to a larger readership through his contributions on the subject of snow and avalanches. These appear online in winter on the German ski touring and freeride site Powderguide[5], among others.

His blog also covers various topics about the Sellrain mountains. It is mainly about local geomorphology, glaciers and glacier retreat, rock glaciers, local historical events, weather and climate.

Notable mountaineering activity

Ruetz does not participate in competitions. His successes lie primarily in speed ascents of high alpine circuits or hut-to-hut trails, single-day ascents of what were originally multi-day ski traverses[6], and steep skiing.

These include the ascent of the Stubaier Höhenweg in one push in 21h 39' in the Stubaital with Richard Obendorfer[7] and the Berliner Höhenweg in the Zillertal in 28h 35' solo. Furthermore, the winter ascent of the 6961 m high Aconcagua[8][9], the highest mountain in the Americas, as well as the first ski descent of the north face of the 5220 m high Tres Gemelos in Argentina. Ruetz also makes first ski descents of steep chutes and faces in the Stubai Alps[10]

In 2015, Ruetz climbed a total of over 300,000 vertical meters in mountaineering.

Single-day ski traverses

He introduced the Orient Express ski traverse, historically known in the greater Innsbruck area and later increasingly forgotten, with 59 kilometers and 5900 meters of ascent to a broad public and did it in one day.[11]

Lukas Ruetz became aware of the Fotscher Ski Express and subsequently of the Orient Express through the stories of his father. Through his research and multiple ascents of these ski traverses, Ruetz is considered a leading figure for this form of ski mountaineering in the German-speaking world. Due to his activity including publication on his blog, these ski traverses became very well-known tours in the ski touring scene and are carried out annually by numerous ski mountaineers. Also large tour portals such as German bergsteigen.com[12] or Alpenvereinaktiv[13] have adopted the Fotscher Express on the basis of Ruetz' information in their repertoire.

The Große Reibn in the Berchtesgaden Alps is one of the few similarly popular ventures on touring skis in the German-speaking world.

He invents, plans and undertakes other single-day ski traverses such as the Lüsener Express and the Sellrain Symphony. Both connect some of the most beautiful mountains of the northern Stubai Alps in one day with well over 5000 meters of ascent. In addition, Ruetz mastered the route to the Zuckerhütl, the highest mountain of the Stubai Alps in the border area to South Tyrol, from St. Sigmund in Sellrain in one day with touring skis and published the tour under the name Zucker Express, literally meaning "Sugar Express".

Inspired by Ruetz's ski traverses and his publications, new single-day ski traverses have been launched by ambitious ski tourers since the winter of 2020/2021. These include, for example, the Wipptal Express in the Brenner region.

In addition to the ski traverses in Sellrain, Ruetz also plans and undertakes long, single-day tours in other regions: The Weißkamm Sommerski Express is based on his idea[14]: a ski crossing over the Weißkamm in the Ötztal Alps that connects some of Austria's highest peaks and largest glaciers, and in most years can be done into July without backpacking the skis.
