History
Dr. Matthew O. Leavitt, Stanford-trained pathologist, founded Lumea in February 2014. Prior to founding this company, he was a pathologist in a rural hospital system. Dr. Leavitt[1] and his colleague and fellow founder, Dr. Jared Szymanski purchased a slide scanner to start digitizing slides in California. After a year, they decided to create an entire digital pathology system beginning in the clinic. They brought in automation engineer Dr. Mark Evans, the third and final founding member of Lumea. He invented Lumea's automated grossing system. They founded the company in February 2014 as Leavitt Medical.
The name changed to Lumea several years later. Lumea is a Romanian word that means "the world" or "people." Lumea platform and technology is used in various clinics, labs, and pathology practices across the country for cancer diagnostics. Most recently, several artificial intelligence companies formed partnerships with Lumea to incorporate their algorithms in Lumea's digital pathology platform BxLink.

Tech
The BxChip® (Biopsy Chip) is a tissue microarray[2] for needle-core biopsies. It is used in labs. It was invented by the Themis Pathology founder Dr. Sorin Musat. Themis Pathology is a subsidiary of Lumea. The purpose of this microarray was to reduce tissue linear variability.[3] A secondary purpose was to reduce the effect of cuts in lab reimbursement rates. A microarray that can be multiplexed on a single slide can reduce lab costs[4] and preserve more tissue.[5] The BxBoard (Biopsy Board) is used in hospitals or clinics to replace formalin bottles for needle-core biopsy transportation.
The Smart Tissue Camera is a camera that uses an algorithm to automatically gross tissue.
Digital Pathology Software
The Lumea BxLink® (Biopsy Link) is a Laboratory Information System (LIS), Electronic Health Record (EMR), and Digital Slide Viewer all in one.
Artificial Intelligence
In March 2022, Lumea formed a partnership with Verily. Verily will use Lumea's platform to help develop and enhance their AI, which will then be available to BxLink users.[6] The AI will grade specimens, which will reduce variability in pathology scoring processes.
In August 2022, Lumea formed a collaboration with Tempus. The Tempus technology[7] can digitally screen cancer patients with AI to see who would benefit from molecular profiling and qualify for targeted therapies.
